    Asterius the Bullgod's Interests
GeneralI love books, films and video games. And, although, I haven't been able to afford it in years, I love to play the occasional round of golf.
MusicI like a little bit of everything, although, I'm not wild about top 40 pop or most contemporary C & W. I love Rock, Blues, Jazz, World, etc. Soundgarden, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, John Coltrane, Van Halen (w/David Lee Roth), Black Sabbath, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Megadeth, Led Zepplin, Miles Davis, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Wagner, Korn, CCR, The Doors, System of a Down,
MoviesApocolypse Now, The Manchurian Candidate (the original), Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill 1 & 2, Taxi Driver, Gangs of New York, Goodfellas, The Aviator, The Departed, The Lives of Others, The Matrix, Seconds, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Star Wars, 2001, Hellraiser, James Bond films, Ridicule, Muriel's Wedding, Unbreakable, Ran, High Plains Drifter, Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby.
TelevisionThe Sopranos, Deadwood, Rescue Me, Rome (oh why did they cancel that show), Battlestar Galactica(the new version), Dr. Who (both old and new), The Prisoner, Star Trek (any version but Voyager),Prisonbreak, Lost, The X-Files, Twilight Zone ( the original), Heroes, and 24 (although last season stunk), Torchwood. Also love the History Channel. I loathe game shows, talk shows and reality T.V.
BooksToo many to mention. I've read over 15000 books since I was a kid and I've enjoyed more of them than not. Some of my favorites include 1984, Heart of Darkness, Post Office, Johnny Got His Gun, Crime and Punishment. I dig noir and hardboiled detective stories. I was really into SF when I was younger. Philip K. Dick is the Man! I prefer Bukowski's pre-death writing to the posthumous stuff. For short fiction, I have to tip my hat to Chekov, Joyce Carol Oates, Carver, and Tobias Wolff. And I basically have a soft spot for anyone I've ever published.

   Asterius the Bullgod's Blurbs
About me:

I am an over-educated, under-employed freethinker -- or, as I like to think of myself, a freelance human. I write a little bit of everything from short fiction to poetry and creative non-fiction, and also publish the work of others as editor-in-chief of Asterius Press, which produces Devil Blossoms and The 13th Warrior Review as well as Gnome: the online journal of underground writing. My own writing has been published in a number of small press literary journals and online. I have had 3 poetry collections published and a fourth I hope to see published before I die although, for the moment, it is floating around the world as a kind of urban legend or Flying Dutchman. Currently working on a novel and a really awful screenplay.

For the most part, I am politically left of center, although I eskew labels of any stripe. I try to keep an open mind. The Bushies are idiots, but they don't have the market cornered on idiocy. To me, any group which surrenders it's common sense, logic, and integrity to serve a particular immutable worldview isn't worthy of my time or respect.

The same goes for organized religion. I simply can't find comfort or put stock in organized religion. I suppose if I were to assign myself a label, I'd call myself a quantum deist. I guess I do believe in a god of sorts, but see god as more of a process than a all-powerful, all-knowing being, and only call it god for lack of any better name to assign to it. I do believe in the human soul, but don't believe the soul (or individual consciousness, whatever) lives beyond the life of the body. I don't believe in Heaven or Hell except as states of mind we experience right here on planet Earth. I simply think that's the silliest thing I've ever heard. What the point of living if you have to die to know paradise? And isn't life hard enough down here? What's the point of Hell? Shouldn't there be a statute of limitation on suffering?

If you are interested, you might also check out my blog Diary of a Mad Editor. Those of you who are involved in writing and publishing might find it of use -- or at least entertaining.

A recent oral cancer survivor, I also have another blog, Patient Zero dedicated to my battle with the disease. Those recently diagnosed with the disease or who knows someone fighting cancer, might find this useful.
Who I'd like to meet:
Nelson Mandela, because I truly admire him. Martin Scorsese, because I dig his films. Jesus Christ, because I'd like to know what he thinks of the crap that's done in his name. The Dali Lama, because he seems like a cheerful dude. Any person possessed of genuine genius, because we live in a mediocre age. Since I'm not likely to meet any of those guys, I'd settle for meeting a few kindred spirits -- individuals who are intelligent, well-read, interesting and have a sense of humor.

Thanks for adding me. ¶ People hear only what they want, so facts alone won't wake them; they need inspiration too. ¶ This world's evils have a common root: Bullies, liars, thieves, & murderers — particularly those in public office — believe we're all separate, motivated only by self-interest, by greed & fear. They want us to share that belief; they use it to justify themselves, to manipulate us, to shape the world's political & economic systems, perpetuating war & poverty. ¶ But you & I have found something better inside ourselves & our friends. It's in everyone, if we can just wake them; we're all one flesh & blood. Let's spread that vision, for until we do our other advances will be minor & temporary. (I've been sending out emails to promote ideas by Lakoff, Waldman, & Hartmann about *how* to spread the word.) ¶ In the ideological struggle, no one can afford to be just a spectator. Join the movement, if you haven't already: get involved in whatever way feels right for you. Question authority. Keep fighting, loving, hoping, singing. Hand in hand, we may still be able to heal this world. ¶ For now, let's see if this meme will spread: "CLOSE GITMO BY BASTILLE DAY. PASS IT ON.
" ¶ Love, Eric
