My friends, the Dallas House scene, Yoshinori Sunahara, Dahlia, Quasimodo Jones, Maetrik, Miss Kitten, Swayzak, Ricardo Villalobos, ESG, the 80s(the entire decade), Angie Reed, Terry Poison, everyone I have ever collaborated on a project with, All Electro (even the bad stuff), My ever growing knowledge of all music and its history, All walks of jazz, afrobeat, and worldly rythms. And last but not least I gain influence from those who doubt and resist my ideas. Its a nice feeling to accpomplish that which is deemed not possible.
Let us start with a generous helping of digital abstract meets Big Daddy Roth on a bed of stirred Picasso a la Mark Ryden ladled in Sailor Jerry’s finest dressing with a light garnish of Issey Miyake, place all ingredients in a drum machine, mix well, serve chilled.
Jabwai (Joby Cummings) got his first taste of electronic music in the mid 80s. In the classic comedy Beverly Hills Cop, Eddie Murphy walks in to a contrived new wave clothing store, in the background plays a weird, abstract synthetic music. Jabwai was instantly hooked. He soon discovered Thud Slap, a weekly show on KNON, a public radio station in Dallas, Texas. Shortly there after he sought out such early influences such as Greater Than One, Clock DVA, KMFDM, Coil and anything else on Wax Trax! Records.
Jabwai entered the club scene in 1988. He quickly found his way into various clubs specializing in electronic dance music. One such club was the legendary Aqualounge which opened in 1989, a pivotal moment in the Dallas dance scene. Aqualounge paved the direction of Jabwai’s roots in house and techno, under the influence of such DJs as Luke Sardello, Rob Vaughn, and A. One. Along side Aqualounge, Jabwai also followed many of Dallas party crews, such as Hazy Daze and Home Grown Productions. Joby’s original attraction to the house scene was the open minded, and nurturing nature of it’s followers. When Jabwai walked into Aqualounge, he found the people inside did not care for the questions of race, income, or what he did for a living. All that mattered was that you came, and came for the music. Ten years after Aqualounge, Jabwai took a late start in going from a loyal club patron to an enthusiastic producer.
