DID YOU KNOW?
Jack was born two months prematurely in a hospital elevator and was born a jaundice yellow to his skin, which resulted in the nurses crying: "A little yellow lemon!".

He was a late speaker. His first sentence as a child was 'I is froze' after climbing out his pram and crawling to his parents, telling them he was cold!

Jack lost his virginity at 17 - in a car!

He was a sickly child - undergoing ten operations before the age of 13. His illnesses included tonsillitis and mastoiditis (ear problems). He had missed a year of school because of this and so always dreaded hospital visits.

For being brave from his operations as a child, his parents bought him a pony called Pepper - but Jack kept falling off it, causing more injuries.

Jack was a class clown at school - he did impressions of WC Fields and of people snoring in different styles and techniques. He also pretended that ants were crawling over his body. Jack admitted: "It was definitely to get more respect from my peers. I was incredibly versatile, even then."

Jack was a big fan of cars and enjoyed driving fast in them to work - he was specifically very fond of the Aston Martin automobile.

Jack had many pets during his life - a small dog called Duffy that he had during the 1950s and later on in the 1990s, he owned three dogs called Walter, Virgil and Chloe.

His maid during the 1960s was called Impa.

When co-star Marilyn Monroe admitted to wearing nothing but perfume in bed, Jack jokingly said: "I wear only my underpants."

As a kid, Jack had a fear of playground slides.

When he was promoting Fire Down Below (1957) in England, Jack met Princess Margaret but he didn't realize who she was. News of this incident was splashed in British papers for weeks on end afterward. Making amends, Jack escorted the Princess to her hotel from Les Ambassadeurs, a London nightclub.

When he reached stardom in 1954, Jack had trouble keeping excited young girl fans away from his hotel room, who kept tracking him down.

In The Apartment (1960), Jack is seen to be putting nasal spray into his nose after catching a cold. In real life, Jack always had nasal problems. Sitting in his dressing room one day, he accidentally squeezed the liquid into his eyes.

In the 1950s/60s, Jack's smoking wasn't bad - at most, he would have around 8 or 9 a day. But by 1974, smoking seemed more essential to him. He would now smoke one or two packets a day. Jack would sometimes wake up during the night coughing but would then light up because he was awake. However Jack was perfectly aware of the changes in himself and he soon cut down on cigarettes but his fond of drinking was the hardest part for him.

In 1964, Jack was named #1 Male Box Office Attraction, beating Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, Jerry Lewis and John Wayne.

During the filming of The Fortune Cookie (1966), Jack saw a hit-and-run driver. He gave chase to the criminal and then provided the local police with all the necessary information. The following week, he was subpoenaed to testify in court.

Jack shed 30 pounds to play Harry Berlin in Luv (1967), which is why he looks a lot thinner than normal. Making his potential weight to be 138 pounds, he would eat 30-cent hamburgers in the studio canteen, rather than eat slap-up meals in the actors' posh dining area of the studio.

He was always pleasantly overjoyed whenever excited fans asked for an autograph or photo taken. He would also try his best to reply to as much fan mail personally as he could. Jack once said the character that people most wrote to him about, on average, was devilish villain Professor Fate from The Great Race (1965).

Upon meeting breathtaking blonde Marilyn Monroe in early 1958 for Some Like It Hot (1959), as Jack held out his hand to shake hers, Marilyn ran up to him and kissed him fully on the lips. At that moment, Jack said that he could not remember feeling more wonderful! Marilyn admired his body of work and Jack was impressed with her thorough knowledge of the previous parts he had played. Jack said: "She had me in the palm of her hands." The two stayed great friends after the filming.
