1954 Jack Giering 3 years old, parents pulling people off the street to listen to the “Amazing child” play. 64 – 65 "The Scarlet Pumpernickle" Opened for bands the likes of Sly and the Family Stone, Shangri-La’s, Marcels.
Played with a soulful originality that forebodes things to come. Played first professional recording gig 1969 while working in summit studio in Denver with dear friends Dik Darnell, ( a great man with too many accomplishments to list) Myron Pollac, (“Sugarloaf drummer) and guitarist Dugg Duggan. Dugg traveled with Dolly Parton for many years. Jack and Dik worked and helped drastically change music history on the session with “Baby Huey and the Babysitters” that yielded “Listen To Me” And “Change Is Gonna Come” given credit by Nelson George in his book “Hip Hop America” as the source of the 1st rap samples. (Making us the grandfathers of rap and Hip Hop!)
Shortly thereafter Huey died Jack, his lifelong love Samikay, and two key members of Huey’s band, left for Columbia south Carolina to work with a band that agreed if they came, to put together an original act. Unfortunately, they were a cover band fronting for various acts and had no such intentions almost 2 years later jack managed to save enough money to escape again.
Meanwhile “The Babysitters” fell apart soon after (even with their new singer Chaka Kahn) they couldn’t fill Huey’s shoes. A child in their immediate future, Jack and Sami settled in a very remote Pennsylvania location where he finished college played the keys every day became a 4th grade teacher for a long time. Then restaurant owner, then logger till his devastating series of heart attacks shocked and beat back from death many times. Survived an emergency tracheotomy that left him with most of his voice gone. The doctors thought they might be able to keep him alive for 6 months. (A miracle at that!) At the urging of Sami Kay, Jack got up and tried to play again with Sami’s words in his head “Please don’t take your music to the grave!” he had to learn to play again. (Brain damaged) that was over 3 years ago. Jack is not only still kickin’, but has a “music family” that he and Sami love like blood relatives. We have laughed a lot together, held each other in times of grief and cried together. Sami, Jack and Michele have pulled each other from very dark places and the terrible loss of John’s wife Val, still brings many tears.
This is not just music. It is love-, despair, relief, fear, and emotions that are beyond worldly description. These names Phil Keaggy , John Sferra, Larry Say, Michele Mcelhinny, Jeff Albright, Neil Williams, Spiny.
Thank you God for sending the world’s finest people. Who also are the worlds finest at what they do. Music for the right reason—thank you God.
