Jack's Castle are an indie/pop/ambient/pre-rock/post-folk/surf (boogie board) /minimalist four piece band based in Melbourne. They are one of the best indie/pop/ ambient/pre-rock/post-folk/surf (boogie board) /minimalist bands in the country. Some say the world.
Their beginnings date back to early 2006 when they opened up a myspace page on the back of a promise made to them by the Arctic Monkeys, via the popular media, that they would be famous within a fortnight.
Two weeks later Jack's Castle cried itself to sleep. The band's recently adopted slogan, "Don't Believe the Hype", had proved as optimistic as it was unnecessary.
Four years on, Jack’s Castle have done what bands do. They released an EP. It did ok. They released another. It did better. They launched at The Corner Hotel on a Wednesday night. They sent their CDs to community radio stations, then called up those stations and requested themselves. They spammed their friends. They registered an ABN. They forgot to submit a Business Activity Statement. They got fined. Heaps. They got a catalogue distribution deal. They paid for some ads in Beat. They played at the bottom of the bill at a festival or two. They got a friend to manage them. It didn’t work out. They got another friend to take photos of them. It didn’t work out. A guy from EMI emailed them once. He was only flirting. They checked their myspace hits daily. They entered competitions and didn't win. They played in Tassie. Then Sydney. Then at the Dunkeld Football and Netball Association Annual Dinner.
And finally, they released their debut album "On a Colour TV". It's a largely thematic album centred around pop spirituality. It explores themes of escapism, philosophy and narcissism from the perspective of the modern day commodification of spirituality. The opening lyric to the title track best captures this tension: "Well I'm selling my greed for price, cause a few hundred dollars would be nice."
It sure would. So go ahead and buy the album or come to a gig. If you do both, Jack's Castle will love you, forever and ever.

It's been a great year so far, full of fantastic shows, great support slots with Marty Simpson (Australian Idol), Jon Stevens (Noiseworks), Daryl Braithwaite, Diesel, a couple of interstate tours and my debut EP release! It's been fun guys and girls, so let's see it off with a bang!
