3 pieces posted here ("seaweed/muezzin", "the endless now & then" and "the incredible thing" ) are from my imminently forthcoming full-length carrot, PRETENSION & RELEASE, due as soon as i finally finish the last track... FYI: "the endless now & then" is shamelessly based solely on the layered mangling of several brief samples sourced from SOME SNAKES by cleveland sinners JERK (check 'em out!). "incredible..." takes its name & inspiration from a soundbite of famed audio-anthropologist Alan Lomax, who (referring to recording regional folk musics & replaying the recordings for the players) says, "the incredible thing about this music is, when you play it back for people, they realize that they, and their stuff, is just as good as anybody else."

jack smiley was born john hartford geers in portland, oregon, but grew up in berea, in the burbs outside cleveland, ohio. he-- wait, why the hell am i talking about myself in the third person?
past musical projects include '93-'98 as one half of electronic duo MAN VS. MAN (with mark gluth; a testament to the breadth of the ensoniq sq-1; mostly unreleased), 2001-2005 as one third of DAVENPORT RECORDS' cheekily creepy sample-mashers the 9-VOLT HAUNTED HOUSE (who still soldier on as a duo), 2003-2006-? as one third of the ambient droners for conscious evolution in COLORFORMS (now a quartet in which i am not currently involved but recommend checking out; more vintage bliss-minded trio sessions will soon see the light of day & trump the s/t debut handily), and various live improv sessions for the last several years with many clevo-area monsters of sound: with the HARD LUCK TRIO (along with eric koltnow on vibes/electronics & neil chastain on drums), ROCKY'S CHILI BRIGADE/TIT (sponsored by the inimitable krauty mckraut & featuring a rotating cast usually including at least mark r. & andy, plus many others), the MATTHEW WASCOVICH / JACK SMILEY DUO (unFX'd sax, wasco from scarcity of tanks on mostly chord-free guitar-- live free skronk improv jitterbug perfumigation, as yet only one performance), madcap live sets playing with MADBUNNY (brin metzendorf [RIP] & noel maitland on guitars/basses/vocals, me sax and/or drums + vocals), as well as a one-off chasmic freak-in sax/drums/chant/percussion rite named SO FUCKED (a volatile duo conceived by brin ).
i was recently playing in a new band called AT WAR FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE which was a magickal headcleaning folksy thing with noel maitland of madbunny & the dord film collective on bass, and sade wolfkitten (who has/had a great radio show on wruw 91.1fm called "blacklight temple") on accordian... this project is, sadly, now likely burnt out.
CURRENT UNDERTAKINGS INCLUDE: a duo with RODNEY MAPES (once-upon-a-time-frontman for INSANITY & THE KILLERS) called the DUBAI BROTHERS, which is aimed at infusing arabic, indian, persian etc. musics with dance beats to create catchy shit that car companies will want to put in their commercials for exorbitant fees paid; my newly-assembled ritualistic phlegm band is called THEE THIRD EYEBROW and includes rodney, pokey, and scratchy. the combined age of TTE well exceeds 200 years, which is, like, super-important.
NEW INVOLVEMENTS: UMM QASR, featuring Ian PE on guitar, Nick Riley (Mystery of Two) on drums, Scott Pickering (Flat Can Co., etc. etc. etc.) on drums, me on sax; recording an improv trio w/ J. Guy Laughlin (dr) & Fluxmonkey (hand-built electronics); plans for a trio recording w/ Clan of the Cave Bear, and a few other surprises as well.
