Sounds Like
Generally the band could be classed as a paradoxon with so many musical influences fusing at the same time. The Jackson Jailbreakers was essentially a cover band, however, many of the songs that were taken are certainly not what one would call mainstream and were radically rearranged.
Last year saw a change in direction with the boys writing their own material - the album Livin on the West Side. These recordings were, alas, strongly influenced by the prolific consumption of hard liquor and other substances not allowed in sport on behalf of Dom and Speedy (the dangerous duo), and also a period of turmoil and introspection. The message the band tries to portray, if that is ever possible, is one of utter self deprecation. If you can't laugh at yourself, you can't love yourself, and if you can't do that, you may as well just become a bitter politically-correct kill-joy.

The Jackson Jailbreakers is a Blues band from Graz, Austria. Formed in the summer of 2003, Dominic, Peter and Vladimir – the mainstay of the band – had the idea of putting together a ripping Blues band. The initial idea was to play Chicago standards, but the line-up was never going to stick to just one style.
The debut line-up consisted of singer Dominic Welsh, Vladimir Vesic (drums), Peter Jaklitsch, Franz Steiner (keys), Micky Lee on lead guitar and Ukrainian Max Deineko (later to be replaced by Enes Seferovic and Edvin Hadzic) on bass. The influences of the band were and are as individual as its members. Micky and now Speedy are essentially full-blooded rock guitarists with their very own idea of how blues should be played – they have certainly given us the electric touch. The musical styles shown by the band range from Delta through to Rock – from the legendary John Lee Hooker, to Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix, Chris Rea and AC/DC, notwithstanding the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Singer Dom is a showman all the way; it all starts with the outfit, the persona, the deep-throat growl, hustle and howl of the harp going to the inimitable ability of feeling, living and breathing rock'n'roll and the blues.
Vladimir is the stoic of the band; always relaxed and never loud - he is our director, prompting and prodding with his down to earth shuffle and roll. Zuba has graduated from Graz famous Jazz School at the University of Performing Arts and has gone from stength to strength. What Malcolm is to AC/DC, Peter is to us, never without beer, cigarettes and an instinctive foot-tapping rhythm.
The position of bass was long not solved and The Jailbreakers have had several bass players, including the excellent Dusan Simovic and Milan Nikolic. Due to various commitments and musicians moving away, the line-up frequently changed, eventually remaining with just Peter on guitars, Franz ..s and Dusan or Milan on bass.
Alas, this line-up was short-lived until Vladimir found a young Brazilian street kid named Speedy playing for soup and a blanket at various jam sessions. Apparently the kid had talent. That he was going to be the next lost guitar hero with his pedal to the metal nobody realised. Now we had found the perfect replacement for the technically gifted Micky, but also someone who can blend, chop, change, balance and drink at will – all at the same time.
Finally, resolving the bass question, Franz had been practising bass and studying it as his second instrument. He had stepped in from time to time on the odd gig, but now was his time to rise from the ashes and stick to his promise showing everyone how mean a man can play a cheap bass guitar. Funky, solid, rocking without the suave, Franjo ticked all the boxes and we hope to keep him longer than previous bass players.
After a successful start to the year winning the panel vote in the final of the competition “Star of the Bar”, the band have played numerous gigs with great reviews and are about to release an album full of their own material under the banner of “Livin' on the West Side”. An eclectic mix of blues, rock, funk and jazz, the record serves as a compilation of the lads' musical influences along with stories, observations, dreams and aspirations from their everyday lives.
