What Will Happen to Us When the Oceans Die? Category: Blogging What Will Happen to Us When the Oceans Die? Commentary by Captain Paul Watson This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper - TS. Eliot The Hollow Men During the this season’s Whale Wars episode where the Antarctic ice is buckling and stressing the hull of my ship, many of my crew and most of the general public that viewed the drama of our encounters with the ice were puzzled by my apparent lack of concern. I had the situation under control of course so there was no need to be overly concerned beyond the usual concern and caution one must have when navigating in ice conditions in a remote area. But what puzzled me is that so many people were concerned and shocked that my hull would breach while remaining oblivious to the stresses and strains on the biospherical hull of spaceship Earth. The huge spherical ship that carries all of us through the black void of space is presently suffering severe stress and ecological engineers know that we have a very serious situation on our hands, so serious that it threatens the survival and thus the future of the entire human species. It’s happening now. I’m not speculating about the distant future. The first crack in our global life support system is widening now and we are about to experience our first major systems failure.. We are on the threshold of the first major eco-system collapse of the Homocene. The Homocene is the 6th major mass extinction event in the planet’s history. The last such extinction event was the Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction event which occurred 65 million years ago. That was the event that wiped out the dinosaurs. In the past 540 million years there have been five major events when over 50% of animal species died. This one, the sixth, is called the Homocene because one species, our own is responsible for this catastrophic event that will see more species of plants and animals go extinct between 2000 and 2065 than we have lost over the last sixty-Five million years. This is a major disaster, greater than any war, Tsunami, earthquake or fire, yet to read the newspapers or to watch television, one would be hard pressed to see any sense of urgency or even great concern. This week Charlie Veron, the former chief scientist of the Australian Institute of Marine Science stated “There is no way out, no loopholes. The ..Great Barrier Reef.. will be over within 20 years or so.” . According to Veron, “Once carbon dioxide hits the levels predicted for between 2030 and 2060, all the world’s coral reefs will be doomed to extinction.. “They would be the world’s first global ecosystem to collapse. I have the backing of every coral reef scientist, every research organisation. I’ve spoken to them all. This is critical. This is reality.” He said. Dr Veron’s comments came as the Zoological Society of London, the Royal Society and the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO) held a crucial meeting on the future of coral reefs in ....London.... yesterday. In a joint statement they warned that by mid-century extinctions of coral reefs around the world would be inevitable. According to a report in the Times Online, Warming water causes coral polyps to eject the symbiotic algae that provide them with nutrients. These “bleaching events” were widespread during the El Niño of 1997-98, and localised occurrences are becoming more frequent. (During an El Niño, much of the tropical Pacific becomes unusually warm.) Reefs take decades to recover but by 2030 to 2050, depending on emissions and feedback effects, bleaching will be occurring annually or biannually. Although surface sea temperatures are rising fastest in tropical regions the other big threat to coral reefs comes from the higher latitudes. The cold water there absorbs atmospheric carbon dioxide more readily than warm water and acidifies more easily. When carbon dioxide concentrations reach between 480 and 500 parts per million warm water is no barrier to acidification, and the pH in equatorial regions will have dropped so far, meaning higher acidity, that coral reef growth becomes impossible “Coral reefs are the most sensitive of marine ecosystems,” said Alex Rogers, scientific director of IPSO. “Increased temperature and decreased pH will have a double-whammy effect. Reefs were safe at CO2 levels of 350 parts per million. We are at 387ppm today. Beyond 450 the fate of corals is sealed.” In the five mass extinction events in geological history, key was the carbon cycle, in which carbon dioxide is the primary currency. Its concentration in the atmosphere is higher than it has been for 20 million years. In the Permian extinction, as in all the big extinctions, tropical marine life was the hardest hit. Reef-building corals took more than ten million years to return. .... .. .. The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest and most diverse marine ecosystem, is worth $4.5 billion (£2.8 billion) a year to ....Australia..... Worldwide, reefs are worth $300 billion. “But that is trivial compared with the costs if coral reefs fail,” Dr Veron said. “Then it won’t be a matter of no income, it will be a matter of damage to livelihoods, economies and ecosystems.” .... .. .. The announcement of the certain death of the world coral reef systems including the ..Great Barrier Reef.. was greeted with yawns and apathy by the media and the general public. Twenty years is far too long to capture the interests of politicians and with Jennifer Aniston looking to get back together with Brad Pitt, public concern is distracted..... .. .. The world mourns for the death of Michael Jackson but scarcely notices the impending death of the ..Great Barrier reef.. and the millions of species that depend upon the reefs for survival. As the poet Leonard Cohen once wrote “"we are locked into our suffering and our pleasures are the seal". As we entertain ourselves, the oceans and the planet are dying. The prognosis is not good. With 90% of global fisheries wiped out already and with an irreversible coral reef system collapse occurring right now, the situation is dire, nearly hopeless. But I have faith that we can resurrect the oceans, if only we can stop the destruction and stop it soon. The cause of this imminent global eco-system collapse is some seven billion human beings all sucking the life out of the oceans like lust deranged vampires. It is not a question of saying we should be doing all that is possible to save our oceans, it is a question of we must do all that is possible or else. We no longer have a choice. Failure to act, failure to reverse the pattern has only one consequence – global eco-system collapse or to put it another way the complete failure of the life support system for space ship Earth. The world is full of ecological fools who deny ecological reality. The world is full of mindless mobs of morons obsessed with petty trivialities or distracted by fantasies ranging from silly religions to entertainment. What the world is lacking are ecological engineers and warriors ready and willing to address the threats to our planet and especially to our oceans..... What the great majority of people do not understand is this; unless we stop the degradation of our oceans, marine ecological systems will begin collapsing and when enough of them fail, the oceans will die. And if the oceans die then civilization collapses and we all die . It’s as simple as that and the choice is between committing mindless mass collective suicide i.e. the ultimate total homicide or standing up and fighting for survival. One thing for certain however is that we are running out of time.

About me:

Jacob Dean- Writer, Artist, Landscaper& landscaping design. . Skateboarder/and a lot of many other things... Huge Supporter of Sea Shepherds Conservation Society. 100% believe that everything The Sea Shepherds do are accurate and done for the right reason. Huge supporter of many many other activist groups and organizations. ~~Also love outdoors. Walks in the woods are always nice and peaceful. I have rock climbed all over this country. Yet my favorite place is Arizona. Where I lived for a couple of years.~~ I am also a writer of some sort. There are a few movie projects that I have been trying to work on. I have been writing pretty much my hole life. Fiction and non-fiction. There are some books that I hope to someday publish. Everything from life journeys to poetry books. Writing is my great escape. So is skateboarding. Those things we can do to escape that just 'require yourself' are the greatest moments. I write or draw and it is just me in the pen and paper. I skate, and it is just me and the board. And that is what I love~~~ 'I believe that everyone deserves a fair chance in life. And most even get one. Everyone can start over. There is always hope for a new beginning. Always hope and a opportunity to start again. This is one of the amazing things about life. We learn that it may not be what we think. We can open our eyes to so many things. What you were so many years ago, could be nothing like you are now. For better or maybe, sadly for worse. For me it is for the better. I have been down so many roads that led to so many disasters. But all of those disasters took me to where I am now. Every path I took leads me to 'today'. And today could be a better day then yesterday. This is life. Life as we know it. It is a great big amazing thing. This is the world. It is also a great big amazing thing. And what we have is a great amazing thing. What we have is...what we make it.' JAY ADAMS Pictures, Images and Photos Hunter S. Thompson Pictures, Images and Photos Sarah Bloody Butcher of Alaska. There are animals being abused and being slaughtered for very wrong reasons. There are puppy's in Puppy Mills that are hungry, sick and dying. There are Whales being killed for the humans satisfaction. The ocean life is dying. The animal race being destroyed. And people let this happen. They stand there with there eyes closed and only worry about there stocks and what person they can screw over next. We need to help the helpless. Whales need our help. Puppy's and all animals need our help. NOT just animals. There are children that never got a chance. Because of evil. These people that harm and neglect children are the same crude in this world that kick dogs or kill cats. These are the people that very badly need to be stopped~~~ I cant keep my eyes closed. I cant watch Amber Alerts with out feeling terrible bad. I cant stop thinking about the starving family's in Africa. Those children that have never seen a class room. This is all worth devoting my life for. This is all worth dying for...The Helpless. The ones that are either to scared or just don't know how to help there self's. Everyone and everything deserves a chance.~~ I am a proud activist. I am proud to try to help. I am proud of everyone that does help. If you save a animal or a lost child..you are a hero. Even if you just spread the word for some needy 'cause', you are a hero. A hero comes in many forms. Firemen, cops, and such. They risk there life's for others. They are heroes. Activist groups that go out and devote there life's for what they believe in. Our Heroes. A hero is a non selfish human that comes last. That is a hero in my book.~~I will not stand down to all of this horror. I will not let them slaughter Whales, Sharks, Seals, and all of the ocean life. I will not let a person abuse a animal. I will not let a child starve. A family be homeless in the rain. I will not let Africa go hungry no more. I will not let children be kid napped. I will not let something die for no cause. For no good cause but selfishness. I will not let the forests be destroyed. This is my life. This is what I will not let happen. ~~ "stand until you can no longer stand, but when we fall, we will be proud" sublime. Pictures, Images and Photos

How I got my first speeding ticket :D

Not fast enough to elude the cop unfortunately, but I've got a much faster bike now. :D

Of course that mini-Harley (not mine really) barely sips gas, but even my Kawasaki Ninja ZZR, capable of 175 kph and 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds, gives 80+ mpg hwy. This is about as green a personal vehicle as one can find capable of long distance travel, short of a full electric vehicle with a range of 250 miles per charge like the Tesla. But then, the Tesla costs $100,000, whereas the Ninja cost me barely $3000 with only 2,000 mi. on the odometer. And even if I had a full electric vehicle, as long as the electricity comes from coal, it's just like burning gas. By the way, the Ninja 250 is so popular with women it has the nickname of "Ninjette" (see www.Ninjette.org).

Regardless of gender, I strongly advise you to try out motorcycling as a means of transportation. Of course, the rider should be vegetarian if not vegan, to cut methane emissions from the animal industries. A vegan driving a Hummer emits less greenhouse gasses than a meat-eater riding a bicycle! Besides, short of flying, motorcycling is about as much fun as fun can get!

    FUNERAL MOTORCADE FOR THE DEER

    Project report by
    Anthony Marr

Urban deer massacre ("culling"), combined with unadulterated fun-killing (bow-hunting), is a national disgrace. Through my last 6 Compassion for Animals Road Expeditions (CARE-1 - CARE-6, 2003-2008, each covering 25-42 states over 3-7 months), I have worked with activists in no less than 25 states whose by-and-large pro-culling and pro-hunting officials discharge their "deer management" duties by means of bullets and arrows.

The current hottest battle in the "Deer War" is at the Shawnee Mission Park, Kansas City, which local activists have dubbed "Death Park". There were supposedly some 575 deer living in the 3.7 sq.mi. urban park. Local officials estimate the maximum deer population density to be 50 per sq.mi., which produces the maximum allowable total number of 185 in the park. Up to December 9, 313 deer had been culled by "Dr. Death" Anthony DeNicola. This yields a remaining population of about 260, about 75 higher than the limit of 185, and 75 is about what the Park Board has allocated to the bow-hunters, 15 of whom have been granted permits to do the dirty deed, with pleasure of course...

    THE MIRACLE WORKER:
for those who feel meaningless, powerless and worthless

Legend has it that in the Snows of Kilimanjaro, the carcass of a plains leopard was found; no one knows what the leopard was up there to seek. But when I ascended the great mountain, I knew, for I was there to seek the very same thing.

At pain of extra weight, I packed a gun, not that there anything to hunt up on that altitude, nor was I a hunter in any sense of the word. And in an ice cave amidst the cravasses of the glacier, when the setting sun suffused my chosen tomb with a rosey glow, I shed my last tear on the shoulder of no one who cared, said my final farewell to the cruel and meaningless world, and pointed the gun at my head...

Anthony Marr will lead a FUNERAL MOTORCADE FOR THE DEER in Kansas City on Dec. 9, Wednesday, at the Shawnee Mission Park - "Death Park" - where 313 deer have been slaughtered in November, and another 70-90 are slated to be killed by bow-hunters as of Dec. 9.

Bear in mind that the non-lethal wounding rate by arrow is close to 50%, meaning: to kill 90, they have to shoot 180. And this is in spite of the Immuno-Contraceptive (IC) technology for deer having already been approved for field implementation by both the FDA and the EPA, plus Anthony's own humane, effective and economical IC-delivery invention known as the Auto Deer Assembler (DAA).

Jason Miller, on left in the following video (Part 1 of 7), one of the hot activists and revolutionary thinkers of our time (www.ThomasPaynesCorner.org), will be the organizer and host of the event.

Since I posted my Japan pieces, my Space has come under intense scrutiny from diverse sources in Japan. Latest is a series of 30 hits over the last 48 hours, from a source, would you believe, right within the grounds of the Japanese Imperial Palace!

Now that I have inadvertently captured His Majesty's attention, I may as well take this opportunity to open to him my heart and mind, and thereby to the whole people of Japan. This what I have to say:

    THE DEADLIEST SUBSTANCE ON EARTH:

It exterminated 85% of all species on Earth in the End-Permian Mass Extinction 251 million years ago, and can do it again, right now. The much milder Cretaceous Crisis was the one that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Global warming is real and unfolding. The deniers are either blind or lying.

Join the greatest Anti-Hunting forum - 95,000 comments! Blast a hunter today!
    http://www.topix.com/forum/baltimore/TCH7UNUUJ3I2OJ6KO

On September 14, 2007, Wisconsin activst Amy Burns sent out a circular urging her readers to go to the Baltimore Sun to join in what is destined to be one of its hottest forums ever, a war of minds over the "sport" of hunting, with emphasis on bow-hunting. While her readers began pondering, comments from the pro-hunting side came in hard and fast. "America's most-hated Anti" Anthony Marr jumped in head first, and so did leading anti-huntresses Tierra and Mamasita. Amazingly, the battle is still raging as we speak, more than two years later in November 23, 2009! The total number of comments so far has exceeded 93,000, and growing. This is a phenomenon, and destined to be a classic, not to be missed if you care about animals at all.

Calcutta sounds like a fable in a song, but in reality, it is where John, my colleague and successor, was murdered. He was on the job for only three days when he got his throat slashed. As an undercover investigator targeting the illegal wildlife trade, especially in tiger parts, his real name was unknown, even to me, nor mine to him. We were just John and James to each other. All I know is that he was Chinese American, while his predecessor James - real name Anthony Marr - is Chinese Canadian, and how sincere he was in helping to save the Bengal tiger from being poached out of existence, while its habitat continues to dwindle due to human pressure...

    Dear Jacob,

    I hope you are well.

Below is a video of Nigel Potter's song, No More War (Upon The Green Earth) that is part of the Mantra Of Peace music compilation. I constructed this video for Nigel because it's an important song with a very popular sentiment that has been an anthem for a very long time.

I hope you will watch and appreciate all of our efforts to bring about messages in peaceful artistic means.

Thank you for being our friend :)

    Peace,

    Paul
