I have so far had the honor of being part of The Curtis Salgado Band, which over the years have consisted of many great musicians such as
Dave "DK" Stewart, Brian Ward, Rusty Hall, Dave Fleschner, Willy Barber, Tracy Arrington, Ben Jones, Freddy Trujillo, Don Worth, Micah Kassell and Reinhardt Melz. I have also had the pleasure of playing on and of in The DK-4, which is a very funky New Orleans style piano driven band which includes musicians,
Dave “DK” Stewart, Peter Damman, Don Campbell and
Carlton Jackson. I also played with Janiva Magness Band for a while which included Benny Yee, Gary"Scruff"Davenport & Rena Beavers(Former Little Milton).
I came to the US (from Denmark), in 1999, with about $1200 bucks in my pocket. I traveled by Greyhound bus from New York City to Chicago, then down south, hitting Memphis, Nashville, all the way to New Orleans, and then finally I ended up in Austin, TX. There I met bassist Roscoe Beck, who was very generous in giving me a place to stay until I decided to move to Dallas. Gigging & jamming in various blues clubs & honky tonks while working at a car wash quickly gave me a lesson in the hustle of living as a musician in the U.S. After about 6 months I'd had enough and moved on to Chicago. I lived at the Diplomat Hotel (weekly rates, 21 & over, ain't no joke) until I saved enough money to get my stuff together and move out. I lived in Chicago for about nine months, gigging 5 times weekly with JW Williams & the Chi Town Hustlers. While I lived there I became good friends with bass player Felton Crews, who toured worldwide with Miles Davis on the Warner Brothers Tutu Tour & has played with many greats from Ramsey Lewis to Charlie Musselwhite. I established contact with Felton through Roscoe Beck; Felton also got me the gig with JW. In Chicago I also had the honor of befriending guitar extraordinary, Ronnie Baker Brooks (son of Lonnie Brooks); both musicians taught me a lot. After nine months, I moved to L.A. That was very difficult for me because the contact I was supposed to live with had his phone disconnected when I got there. It was a bad deal, and not having my own car didn't really help my situation. After nine months of being stuck in a way too expensive apartment, I moved to Portland, OR, to join R&B singer Curtis Salgado; I got in contact with him through Bassist Felton Crews, from back in Chicago. Salgado is perhaps most known as the guy who inspired John Belushi to create the Blues Brothers with Dan Ackroyd when Belushi was in Eugene, Oregon, to film Animal House and caught Curtis’ act. It was Salgado who dubbed Albert Collins "the Master of the Telecaster". I played in the Curtis Salgado Band for about five years, touring all over the country, also in Canada & Germany. In the years I’ve spent so far in the US, I’ve had the honor of sharing the stage with some legendary musicians, including: Pinetop Perkins, Bob Margolin, Sam Myers, Derek O’ Brien, George Rains, Roy Rogers, Norton Buffalo, Greg Piccolo, Mark Kazanoff & The Texas Horns, Roscoe Beck, Derek Trucks, Lee Oskar, Janiva Magness, The Phantom Blues Band, Taj Mahal, Johnny Johnson, Robert Cray and Steve Miller.
Had my Fred Stuart Bro Stevie pickups for several months and just had them put in my SRV strat today! I remember you saying that mine seemed to be wrapped hot. Man, they are so beutiful and also pedal friendly! I think just about as close to the SRV tone we can get! I will do a youtube demo and will let you know when done! Something just amazing about them!
Hej Jacob. Ja.
Hey man, just wanted to wish you and Brenda a safe trip. Give me a call when you're in the hill country. It'll probably be cold and wet when you get here...just like home. haha!
You are slamming in that video! Great stuff. Curtis called me a couple of nights ago. He's going to be playing in Dallas....I think I'll be able to catch his last set after my gig. It won't be the same without you, but I'm looking forward to hearing him sing again!
Thank you so much Jacob for honoring us with your precious friendship.... You have a great sound !! We hope that you have are having a simply wonderful day and that the adventures of your Life feel like a ride on the mystery train of Pure Joy.....Thanks again Jacob....
Hey Jacob and friends thereof, Check the original tune "Journey To Freedom" On My Jukebox. It is a Cuban Songo/Funk-Fusion Thang. This is in pre-production with all computer instruments programmed by me with my live guitar track. More details are in the blog. There will be a full version forthcoming with some real humans playing the instruments. Just a preview/note-sketch for now.
Hey Jacob, thanks a lot for contacting me. Shure I can remember when we played at the same festival years ago! I was really thrilled by your playing this evening! Great to hear other nice stuff here on your site. I hope to see you again - and maybe there is a chance to jam a bit. That would be really fun I think! All the best from Germany, Gregor
