I shall try and explain myself to you with an outline of some of my lifes details. At the age of ten I started playing the piano with John Chester, a Polish Concert Pianist at the Royal Conservatoryof Music in Toronto. He was the friend of my mother's opera teacher Madame Lipowska. After high school, I attended an experimental art school for two years on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, now called Victoria Art College. There were seven students and seven teachers at that time.
After completing my art course, I returned to Toronto to be with my family and opened up my painting studio in an old warehouse at the bottom of King and Jarvis. I started helping some friends of mine ( the Cole family) in their jazz club Basin Street, to raise money for paints and basic survival. It was there that I was privileged to meet jazz musicians like Stan Getz, Bill Evans, Jerry Mulligan and Chet Baker. Bill Evans became a good friend to me and advised me to become a singer. He was quite frankly, an amazing soul. His ideas about music and the way he saw life inspired and encouraged me.
Co-incidentally during this time, my mother gave me the piano I had played as a child and I started to play again. I returned to the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and studied piano and voice. Also studying improvisational jazz with Bobby Fenton and Fred Stone ( Freddy Hubbard Band ).
I got my first job as a pianist at the Flamingo Comedy Cabaret. Soon after this I was fully booked in clubs in Toronto. An agent from Germany booked me in Frankfurt which began a long tour of Europe. I stayed in Europe recording demos and co-writing with different artists for Sony and Warner Bros and performing extensively throughout the Continent.
I moved to London and recorded my first album "Mermaids live Inside ". I was blessed to have great musicians rally around to record with me like Andy Partridge from XTC, Mo Foster from the Jeff Beck Band, Vic Coppersmith Heaven who produced The Jam and Neville Farmer. Geoffrey Burgon did a string arrangement for Sidcup Girl. Mermaids can be bought right here when you click the iTunes button or on my website www.jacquelinekroft.com, appointed record shops and on iTunes itself. I married my wonderful and talented Geoffrey and had our beautiful son, Daniel Milo.
I released Pianowife my second album summer 2005 which I have posted two songs for you to hear. I wanted to go back to my roots and use the piano throughout the album. The theme song Pianowife is being used as the title music for an interview TV series in Canada called " In the Mind of " transmitting now on Biography Channel 140 and Bravo TV. Directed by Taffi Rosen of Redhead Productions. Some of the songs from pianowife are in electronica and are being used on television series "riders and rich kids " ITV1, and " the race " ITV2. ( available on Collection of Tronic ) I have written the lyrics the theme music for the Fortsyte Saga " Irenes Song " of which the Welsh opera star, Bryn Terfel has sung. This series won a Bafta award for best music of British Television 2005.
I wrote the music score to my first feature film, Mr. Right and am still at it as there are edits being done. This film is directed by the brother and sister team Jacqui and David Morris and their small Independant English film company called Mugshots.
I have just put on the track Lay Down which I wrote with Matt Andrew's a school buddy of the Orb. Matt is one of my favourite artists that I have worked with I love the laid back coolness of this track.
I also have just put on the track Light which has been used in the television series The Race ... this is playing world wide so somewhere one of you have heard this song ... I wrote this with Lee Mintram who is a great artist and you can see him in my friends under ...Feature Cast ... Ginny David is singing back up vocals for me ... and she has sung with Jeff Beck and many other greats...and she has a band called Any Wednesdays on my favourite artists.
