Jaffer's Interests
|
| General | Classic fiction, comic books (of all stripes), essays (such as in the Best American collections), music, boardgames and cardgames (strategy). Lately I've been into kite-flying. It's fun. Thrift store shopping. My life is rather small, really, but I like it.
Lately I've gotten into gamecraft - that is, since so many pure strategy games involve just boards and pawns and it doesn't really matter what they look like (within certain parameters) that you can easily make your own with available materials. I just made a deck for "Mate", an excellent pure strategy card game. My next project is probably "No Dice", "Amazons", or "Balto." | | Music | In preparation for CONvergence 2007: Creature Features, I've been listening almost exclusively to funk, soul, R&B, hip-hop, afrobeat, etc. I know. They have little in common, but I thought that since there are so few songs on theme, I might as well do what I like and "color up" the soundwaves at CONvergence. I fella can only listen to Weird Al, They Might Be Giants, and Barenaked Ladies for just so long. Not that I don't love them, but have you seen these people dance? If it's not that Grateful Dead "Hey, how did I get covered in cobwebs? Well, that's all right, I'll just take my time getting it off." it's that lame glowstick and yo-yo dancing. Therefore, funk. Unh! James Brown and Curtis Mayfield's Greatest Hits.
I have revised my position on rock music. I've really been getting into that Now Like Photographs epic instrumental music. Stuff that hasn't yet left my mp3 player: Explosions in the Sky, Saxon Shore, and Pelican. | | Movies | Movies that don't waste one second of screen time:
Serenity, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Chinatown. It's just proof that hacks can do really excellent work when given the opportunity. Give me a hardworking hack over a critically-acclaimed "auteur" experimentalist any day. Well, not any day. There are some so-called "hacks" working in Hollywood today who should be shoved into woodchippers. Make them read Syd Field again. | | Television | Arrested Development, Scrubs, Red Dwarf, Dave Chappelle, Alien Nation, Columbo. I watch way too much TV lately, and I don't even have cable.
Can I just say one word? Fillmore! That's right. Chapter cut and everything. I'm in hog heaven. Now I can sleep at night. | | Books | So, a couple of years ago, I compiled a list of science fiction and fantasy books that had been nominated for multiple awards: Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy Award, Bram Stoker, Philip K. Dick, John W. Campbell, Sidewise, etc. etc. This significantly shortens the list as far as what books to read and so far I haven't been disappointed. I'm still not sure that Tea with the Black Dragon was one of the best books ever, but it was pretty good. I especially liked the language.
I also have a list of novellas like that (ranked by how often they have been anthologized) and I'm working on a list of mystery novels. I wish there were more awards for literary fiction. There's the O. Henry, Booker, and Pulitzer, but if there were a few more, it might narrow the list a little more. | | Heroes | Malcolm and Martin. |

About me:
I used to think of myself as an aspiring author. Now I think of myself as a burgeoning alcoholic. (That's a joke. I don't really drink.)
I read a lot of books. I'm working my way through the Penguin Classics - slowly - and I read Harper's Magazine. I also read a lot of comic books.
I manage a game shop. It's a lot of fun except for the paperwork and whatnot. Sometimes I worry that my store isn't making enough money and that we don't carry enough of the sort of games that I really like, which I fear is starting to affect my credibility. Still, I haven't started enjoying LCR yet, so maybe there's hope.
I do some volunteer work about town that is pretty satisfying.
What else can I say? I'm an introvert and probably compulsive. I tend to avoid internet forums because you never know when you're going to end up on somethingawful.com.

Who I'd like to meet:
Ever read the "Black Widowers" series by Isaac Asimov? Something along those lines.
Actually, there are a number of pure strategy games that play pretty well PBeM, like Gipf and Chess. People who like playing games like that over long periods of time. It gives you an excuse to write.
