IRD HISTORY:
The idea of a day dedicated to Reggae Music was inspired by Mrs. Winnie Mandela during her visit with her husband, Mr. Nelson Mandela, to Jamaica when she spoke about the Power of Reggae Music to uplift her people during their struggle against apartheid and founded in 1994 by Andrea Davis of Jamaica Arts Holdings.
After the 1994 Inaugural Staging and Second Production in 1995, IRD was Suspended until its Return in 2000 as an Annual Calendar Event and Global Media Festival Celebration.
The Governor General, His Excellency The Most Honorable Howard Felix Hanlan Cooke, issued a Proclamation naming July 1 “International Reggae Day”.
INTERNATIONAL REGGAE DAY OVERVIEW - JAMAICA ARTS HOLDINGS
The International Reggae Day recognizes our ambassador and one of reggae's true giants...Mr. Joseph "Culture" Hill.
An innovative genius, spiritual philosopher, family man and gentleman, Joseph Hill exemplified the artistic excellence which has earned reggae music and Jamaica the respect of the world.
Joseph Hill was an endless source of intellectual and spiritual insight and a keen commentator on society as well as an ambassador not only for his music but for his culture. A humbly brilliant spirit whose time with us was productively spent creating an artistic legacy for generations to come.
The music of Culture will echo in the annals of reggae history as one of the most important body of work created and his presence as an artiste remembered for the style, elegance and class which always distinguished Joseph Hill.
Love and blessings to his wife and partner Pauline Hill, son Kenyatta, the family, band, friends and fans.
Post your respect on the tribute site established for Joseph Hill

Influences
The International Reggae Day (IRD) Fambly holds hands and hearts wit Jamaicans around the world in appreciation for the life and works of our cultural Mother Miss Lou who passed in the summer of 2006. IRD will continue to celebrate the life and legacy of Miss Lou who was honoured as an IRD cultural hero on July 1, 2006. Miss Lou was Jamaica's DJ original and the mother of Jamaican kulcha. A beacon of national pride and ancestral resistance. A beloved teacher and performer, her work has inspired a nation to embrace itself and unleash a cultural force that has impacted the world...
