One Rhythm. One Beat 2: TAKES A VILLAGE TO SURVIVE IRD HISTORY: The idea of a day dedicated to Reggae Music was inspired by Mrs. Winnie Mandela during her visit with her husband, Mr. Nelson Mandela, to Jamaica when she spoke about the Power of Reggae Music to uplift her people during their struggle against apartheid and founded in 1994 by Andrea Davis of Jamaica Arts Holdings. After the 1994 Inaugural Staging and Second Production in 1995, IRD was Suspended until its Return in 2000 as an Annual Calendar Event and Global Media Festival Celebration. The Governor General, His Excellency The Most Honorable Howard Felix Hanlan Cooke, issued a Proclamation naming July 1 “International Reggae Day”.
