Jake Cohen is a 7th semester student at Berklee College of Music, majoring in Performance. Growing up in Philadelphia, PA, in a house full of music, Jake Cohen began playing drums at age 4 on a 1967 Rogers Blue Sparkle Holiday Kit – the same drum set he uses today. His father introduced him to many artists, ranging from fusion greats like Billy Cobham, Lenny White, and Dennis Chambers, to celebrated rockers Mitch Mitchell and John Bonham, and his later to be mentor, funk giant David Garibaldi.
In the fall of 2008, Jake enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since then, he's skyrocketed to the top of the drumming community. He was invited to join the prestigious Tower of Power Ensemble under the direction of Wayne Naus, is gigging regularly with various Singer/Songwriters and Jazz Groups, touring around the U.S. with new Cape Verdean sensation Ilo Ferreira, and is studying with Jazz/Fusion great/Longtime drummer for Lou Reed Tony "Thunder" Smith.
Jake enjoys working with lots of people rather than just being in one band. Despite growing up on mostly Funk and Fusion, Jake likes to mix it up, playing anything from Pop/Rock to Jazz and everything in between. After graduation he plans to relocate to New York City and work with as many different artists in as many different genres as he can – recording, touring, and gigging. He feels the training he is receiving at Berklee will help him develop not only his musical skills, but solid professional habits such as the ability to come up with parts quickly and consistently, how to interact with music professionals, and – perhaps most important – how to get the gig.
