The Jake Morgan Band is still something of a mystery to the bay area. Jake Morgan the bands lead singer is a native of Louisiana and is originally from New Orleans (home to some of the best music in the country). Jake fuses so many different styles together to create his sound. You can hear everything from southern rock to even Gospel in this bayou boy’s sound.
Gospel is something that is forever present in Jake’s Vocals. Raised in the church for most of his early life, Jake got his feet wet in the gospel scene. He performed with many Gospel artists in many venues including the legendary House of Blues in New Orleans. Jake needed a change however and wanted to be able to stand on his own as an artist. He moved out to the bay area in January of 2008 and began to put together a project unlike anything the bay has seen.
“Everything is like starting from scratch to me right now" says Jake who put everything on the line to pursue his lifelong dream of singing. It’s all or nothing to this artist. Jake and his band play in the city often. You can catch the band next at many hot venues; Hotel Utah, Rockit Room, and Red Devil Lounge are just a few spots the band frequents. The band features Richard Moustirats who plays lead guitar, Gilbert Garlitos on bass, Kelly Beatbanger on drums and Christopher Patton on the keys. Jake also plays acoustic and harmonica to round out the roster. If you haven't seen them yet, you need to go to a live show. The band creates a very electric atmosphere that is highly contagious.
The band is also working on there debut project entitled "Kill the Noise" which will debut closer to the summer. “It has taken some time to put this together but it will be worth the entire wait" says Jake with a smile. The project features songs like Get Some Love, One Shot, and Not Saying Goodbye that have become crowd favorites at shows all over the east bay. The albums title track "Kill the Noise" is something of a rare gem today in songwriting. “It’s about getting past all the things in your life that are just fabrications of reality. It's about Killing the Noise and getting back to the pureness of life."
Other songs like “Infinite Above” may remind you of a Lifehouse Ballad but talk about the troubles endured by Louisiana residents post Hurricane Katrina. The band keeps a lot of there sound relevant but have heavy influences of down south flavor in songs like “Homecoming” and “Josephine”.
It’s all looking so good for Jake Morgan Band. With there fresh relevant sounds we can all get hope that there is still some originality left in this world. Maybe we can all learn something from Jake Morgan Band when they say:
“So baby please don’t lose that southern twang
And ride up on the wind of changing things
To get back all the soul in what we sing
My people coming back to a homecoming”
Jake is also the 2009 winner of Bay Area Entertainer of the year!
