Jak Locke is a cross-genre singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist entertainer from New Orleans, LA. An unconventional solo artist, he performs and records with three separate acts under his own name (rock, acoustic and metal).
Locke has become known for his intelligent lyrics, explosive stage presence and an unapologetically original style that eludes easy classification. An astoundingly prolific songwriter and one of the hardest working performers in the region, Locke's been described as "three intense acts' worth of output somehow masquerading as one single person".
Locke's performs sporadically with his acoustic act, usually backed by Jeremy Borne on bass.
It may come as a surprise to recent listeners of Jak Locke that there is an entire body of acoustic work he's been cultivating for quite a time; performed sporadically at unannounced guerrilla-style sets and under-the-radar shows over the years, recorded and distributed on cassettes and CD-Rs left in unlikely places.
Steeped in allusion, much of Locke's acoustic work reads more like literature than typical lyric. Stylistically, Locke hasn't forgotten how to be diverse either. Music thick with orchestration surrounds Jak's sparse guitar, seeming to suggest dreams and hope while bearing a death-obsessed voice crooning of decay, desolation and loneliness. Other songs share similar subject matter but lilt along a far brighter sonic path; you can almost hear Locke's smile in his voice as he relates one more harsh reality. "You'll never hear me sing a love song," says Locke, "but usually there's an underlying counterpoint. You know, 'this is horrible but why should that stop you from enjoying yourself?' If you have nothing better to do than worry about things that are out of your control, you really must be doing fine...though I guess that's more apparent in some songs than others."
