With respect to diphthongs, Ä behaves as an E, e.g. Bäume /boimə/ (Engl.: trees) The e-vowel spoken short sounds like the Umlaut "ä": lips and lower jaw are more relaxed.
's = opt + u, then a = ä
win's = ctrl-: (colon, so use the shift key), release, then type a = ä
