Politics, public policy, the culture wars, poverty, race and gender equity, the decline of civilized society, the eminent death of the corporate entertainment industry. nothing heavy really.

I have only recently overcome the long time urge to punch out my own eardrums. If you ask me, the music industry is in a complete shambles. But there is a lot of hot shit coming out of Memphis. You can find and listen to all of that on my friends links. If they are on there, they rock balls out. For personal listening, I don't do much in English anymore. I like anything on the Putamayo label, gangsta rap and crunk, rudeboy, Bhangra, early Trenchtown type reggae, raggamuffin, dancehall, Brasileiro, Andalusian bagpipes, Tejano, Indonesian gamelan, Senegalese rhumba (I promise I am not making this up).
Movies
The Razor's Edge, Oh Brother Where Art Thou, A Face in the Crowd, The Grapes of Wrath, Inherit The Wind, To Kill A Mockingbird, 12 Angry Men, Doctor Strangelove, Catch 22, The Quiet American, Full Metal Jacket, Apocolypse Now, Bob Roberts, The Hudsucker Proxy, Ride With The Devil, The Harder They Come, The Blood of Heroes, 13th Warrior, True Romance, Lawrence of Arabia, The Man Who Would Be King. More recent films I like are: The Fog of War, Outfoxed, Cinderella Man, Kingdom of Heaven, Hustle And Flow, Crash, I Heart Huckabees.
Television
C-SPAN, C-SPAN2, (once again, I am not making this up). MSNBC - Hardball, Countdown. Comedy Central - The Daily Show, Mind of Mencia. CNN International, BBC World News, The History Channel, National Geographic Channel, IFC, Sundance, American Movie Classics, Turner Classic Movies.
Books
A little light reading: The Federalist Papers, Two Treatises of Government - John Locke, Leviathan - Thomas Hobbes, The Spirit of Laws - Montesquieu, The Social Contract, Discourse on Inequality - Jean Jacques Rousseau, The Wealth of Nations - Adam Smith, Democracy in America - Alexis De Tocqueville, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire - Edward Gibbon. On the more current list are: Sex Lies and Politics - Larry Flynt, What's The Matter With Kansas - Thomas Frank, With God On Their Side - Esther Kaplan, Collapse - Jarred Diamond, God's Politics - Jim Wallis, Creationism's Trojan Horse - Barbara Forrest, Had Enough? - James Carville.

And the sound that you're hearing is only the sound of the low spark of high-heeled boys.

About me: I bring new bands to Memphis. Someone has to do it. Gainfully employed in the music industry for 20 years now. I have been a night club operator, a concert promoter, booking agent, publicist, entertainment journalist, radio promotions weasel, stage hand, production assistant, limo driver, and a drummer in a country band for a minute. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt, sold it on Ebay. I'm not rich or famous, but I have a fair credit rating and no drug habit. So it's been a break even proposition. Nowadays I just do some booking, go to grad school, and review books and music on Amazon. People keep telling me I should write a backstage tell all, but it would either be boring as a crossword puzzle or some unbelievable bullshit. I see there is a convenient blog on this site so check back in for all the dirt. I might even get sued.
Who I'd like to meet: My job has allowed me to meet most of those people we all say we want to meet. And, surprise, they are just like us. Mostly superficial self absorbed people, a whole lot of posers, and a small handful of genuinely thoughtful, erudite and gregarious types who make the whole show a worthwhile enterprise. I'd still like to meet Ann Coulter so I can come across the desk and bitch slap her on national television. I would actually like to meet Penn Gillette. With all that crazy magic stuff you wouldn't know he was a Fellow at the Brookings Institute. No really. Really.
That girl swinging on the pole is my friend RAIN 2 Time Polecat of the Year. Don't hate.
