James Burchart first began writing songs and making recordings as a young teenager in his home town of Nelson BC, where he was introduced to the hymns of the Lutheran Church, the diverse folk/world beat music of the many local counter-culture artists, and the country and blues music of the blue collar bars and pubs.
Following in the footsteps of singer/songwriters like James Taylor, Mark Heard, and Rich Mullins, He developed his own unique blend of acoustic pop, country, and world music, played on guitar, piano, Appalachian dulcimer. Although hesitant to identify himself strictly with the ’Contemporary Christian Music’ genre, most of his songs are anchored in one way or another to the Christian Faith that is central to his life.
Lyrically, James favors the thoughtful and sometimes meditative, rather than themes that he considerers to have already been well addressed or overuse for commercial viability. He seeks to make music that is once a spiritual and intellectual dialog, accessible to those who share his faith, and those who do not.
He has recorded two albums, ’Songs for the Common Man’ and ’Lost Within the Flame’, and has just completed a 5 song EP called "The Backroads’.
His live performances are alone and unplugged, favoring smaller venues, giving the audience the chance to hear something more intimate and spontaneous than the studio versions of his songs.
