About James Dennett My space Drumkit Exercises Int/Adv
Hi Everybody welcome to my page thanks for stopping by! my name is James Dennett I am a drummer and drum teacher from the central coast NSW Australia. I am 24 years old and have been playing for nearly
10 years, I have my own home drum studio which I also teach out of "James Dennett School Of Drumming". I play and record with a number of bands and artists from the coast/newcastle to sydney. Music is my life and I have an appreciation for all genres of music, Although having
a love for playing Fusion/funk jazz and progressive rock music my main goal is to always try to play all styles of music to ensure that I am comfortable with any musical or recording situation I am put into to.
What you are hearing is a series of exercises that have been taken from my
yet to be completed book. I have basically put together a bunch of random fun exercises split into four categories. FILLS, EXERCISES, GROOVES and DOUBLE BASS DRUM. A lot of the patterns have an 1/8 note beat prior to the exercise to give you a feel of using the exercise as a fill for example.
From my teaching experience I have always found that giving my students a chance to hear what there exercises sound like around the drums, various
tempo's and correct dynamic consistency usually helps them with the motivation to want to really learn and work hard to accomplish the exercise. I know we all at some stage or another have looked at the
dots on the page and thought how will I ever use this or I will never be able to master this! so I always encourage to be as creative as you can be with what is given to you and always remember that the speed is not the important thing, it's the eveness, timing, accuracy and so forth you should be striving for.
I often tell my students that sometimes doubt there technical or speed ability that in my opinion the drummer or any musician for that matter with nice even technique, solid timing and a great feel will always prevail over the crazy soloist with awesome speed and technical ability but lack
of timing, maturity and feel for the music. I feel that guys like Colaiuta, weckl and Gadd for example really have all the chops and flashiness which we all love but most importantly they also have the ability to play a nice even solid groove with loads of feel that we would all love to have, I think thats what makes them the masters they are. We can learn so much from these guys!
James Dennett's School of Drumming has now been published on facebook...Though it does link back Mainly to the Myspace page as this gets updated a lil more frequently

I had a look into those Shure SM 57 and SM 58 mics. On ebay they are approx around the $200 mark each. If lucky you can find them cheaper at auction rather than buy it now. I just had a quick look though. If they gave descent quality recordings that is pretty cheap. I might wait a while though; every $200 counts right now...trying to get a car. haha. I'll put recording off for now but once i have a car and am cashed up i will look into it in more depth, maybe even try to find a good value mic kit... see how we go...Thanks for the mic reccomendations James. I might buy one in a few months. cheers. Hamish.
Ok....awesome....thanks heaps James... I will look into it. It sure would be cool to start doing some recordings. I have been working on that double bass polyrhythm with the flams that you showed me last lesson...it is starting to sound pretty good. I will also need to start thinking about coming up with a solo soon to do some time in 2009 at a school concert thing. I have guitar pro but i haven't used it yet...i will as soon as i get a bit of time. That's my update. haha....i'm pretty busy this week but we might try and organise a lesson some time soon... if I don't see you before christmas, have a good one! Cheers. Hamish.
Hey James.... I was experimenting recording myself drumming just with my video camera. The sound once on the computer isn't actually too bad. Much better than some of the crap that is on youtube. lol. But I was wondering if you had any (cheap) ideas as to how to get a better sound quality... I'm not gonna mic up my kit coz that would definately cost too much at the minute. haha. I think you were trying out just one room mic into the camera a while back... How did that work out? If I try that, what kind of mic should I use? Cheers. Hamish.
