"Spring Giddiness" by Mevlana Jelalludin Rumi
(trans. Coleman Barks)

Today, like every other day,
We wake up empty
and frightened. Don't open the door to the study
and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument.
Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don't go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don't go back to sleep.
People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.
The door is round and open.
Don't go back to sleep.

I would love to kiss you.
The price of kissing is your life.
Now my loving is running toward my life shouting,
What a bargain, let's buy it.

Daylight, full of small dancing particles
and the one great turning, our souls
are dancing with you, without feet, they dance.
Can you see them when I whisper in your ear?

All day and night, music,
a quiet, bright
reedsong. If it
fades, we fade.

"I am dead because I lack desire, I lack desire because I think I possess. I think I possess because I do not try to give. In trying to give, you see that you have nothing; Seeing that you have nothing, you try to give of yourself; Trying to give of yourself, you see that you are nothing: Seeing that you are nothing, you desire to become; In desiring to become, you begin to live."

Rene Daumal

"What kind of people are we? Am I the kind of person who is responsible for there being wars on the earth, for there being injustice? I may think I am not that kind of person. I am not a belligerent person; I don't even wish to have anything to do with war. I have no wish to impose myself on other people, but if I look at my behavior and I see that I take more than my share of what there is in the world, let us say that I am able to eat all not only that I need, but even all that I want of food, that I am able to provide myself with comforts that couldn't possibly be available on the same scale to everyone else in the world, then I am contributing to the whole injustice of the world. And all of us are in this position that we are making our contribution to the intolerance, injustice, and imbalance of the world and essentially there is no difference between us."

J.G. Bennett

"Go out one clear starlit night to some open space and look up at the sky, at those millions of worlds over your head. Remember that perhaps on each one of them swarm billions of beings similar to you or perhaps superior to you in their organization. Look at the Milky Way. The earth cannot even be called a grain of sand in this infinity. It dissolves and vanishes and with it, you. Where are you? And is what you want simply madness?

Before all these worlds ask yourself what are your aims and hopes, your intentions and means of fulfilling them, the demands that may be made upon you and your preparedness to meet them.

A long and difficult journey is before you...Remember where you are and why you are here. Do not protect yourselves and remember that no effort is made in vain. And now you can set out on the way."

G. I. Gurdjieff

“Remembering” by James Farrelly

I have felt your calling in me.
Here in this circle.
We exchange looks; we pass everywhere in the streets;
The quiet or noisy meals; the fruitless rebellions.
To come together: this is all there is.
To return a love alighting in a hidden core.

Here is an excerpt from the writings of Pierre Elliot, to whom I dedicate the music on a forthcoming CD entitled A Tree of Stars:

“One of the best ways to Work on Self-Remembering is to remove what is not Self-Remembering. In the end, nothing stands between you and Self-Remembering but yourself. The more one remembers oneself, the more one is able to remember oneself, because self-remembering is a cumulative process – we can introduce it any time and it cuts through everything to the very meaning of existence. Self- Remembering is an eighteen hour day endeavor – one must be working with some obstacle every hour of the day, and if it is not non-existence or power, it will be imagination, inner-considering or identification.”

-- Pierre Elliot

A Tree of Stars is a love letter to my teachers, Pierre and Vivien Elliot, who have nourished so many seekers worldwide. I hope this music touches each visitor who comes to these pages and will lead you to embrace and give the light that abides in us all. When the project is fully completed it will contain 12 compositions.

Closer to our Edge Grove home....

We will miss you, PJ. Thank you for giving us your love for 14 years--from the time you came to us on Valentine's Day, 1993 until you left us July 15th, 2008. And thank you to everyone who has sent your good wishes for this loss and reminding me that grief, even the grief of a family pet, can be a great teacher. Special thanks to Joshua whose photographs are given here. These four-legged, two brained beings have a way of curling up in our hearts and making a home for themselves.

Floppy ear kisses,

James, Susan, Joshua, and Jacob ..
