Sounds Like
Well, the material on "Vague Nouvelle" was clearly designed as a late 50's-early 60's Blue Note Modern Jazz quintet with 2 horns harmonies. Keeping an eye on the tradition of bebop and hard-bop. Wayne Shorter, amongst all is my composition guru so there are a few tunes which echoes the likes of Witch Hunt and Lady Day. But also some "Monkish" and French Cinema type tunes (there's a little bit of a famous soundtrack quoted in "Nouvelle Vague"...).
The new album "Thesaurus" - out now - offers a bit more of a mid to late 60's tone with more complex tunes and more contemporary arrangements. We hope you'll also find the playing more adventurous...
The last tune "Jazz pilgrimage" is a 4 parts suite revolving around several different time signatures, Part 1 FREE TO DOWNLOAD ON THIS PAGE!
After many years of playing other people's music, the time had come to be put to the test and write some fresh jazz material. It all started in the Summer of 2005 after my daughter's birth. Inspiration came as I wrote a tune for her and then they just came rolling in one after the other, all of different styles and moods. So there we were, the five of us, playing original Jazz tunes and re-creating the sound of the classic Blue Note groups (Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan and al). From swing to blues to latin to bebop to ballad to jazz waltz to Boogaloo, we started revisiting all genres made famous by the jazz icons and tried to add a bit of originality to it. 3 years later, the pad is over 45 tunes strong, with recent compositions gearing towards post-bop and contemporary jazz, some more sophisticated than others and influenced by mid 60's giants (Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson, Charles Tolliver, Woody Shaw).
Album reviews
"Pianist James swings straight into late-50's hard bop territory with the first cut, "Bop affair", and sets out his stall as a top drawer modern jazz exponent. Highlights include the charming soloing on That peaceful hour" and the exquisite ensemble playing on "Loungin' at Lords". Keith Ames - Musician
"Pianist/composer James Hayes has organised a spirited band to execute his refreshing debut cd "Vague Nouvelle". Particular highlights are "Swamp Bash" a groov-ey romp and the samba-tinged "Single Fare to Bahia". Sweet stuff." Frank Griffith www.jazzorg.co.uk
"L’écriture de James Hayes est aérée et la musique du quintet en profite avantageusement. Rejoints sur trois morceaux par le flûtiste Don Stuart, les musiciens se livrent à quelques joutes de bon aloi, comme au bon vieux temps... avec en plus, un je-ne-sais-quoi d’actuel, du au talent d’écriture et au jeu très articulé de Hayes, sans omettre une mention pour la tenue des musiciens (rythmique tendue, cuivres incisifs) qui donne tout son sens à ce disque. A tribute to donc, respectueusement original." Yves Dorison culture jazz

Thanks James, your tunes and playing sound great too. Sorry to disappoint but our album is going to be on FIRE! We recorded at the studio of the ECM engineer Stefano Amerio - that might be the confusion! See you soon, John
