JAMES R. CARLSON (b. 1970, Everett, WA) composes works for dance, theatre, short films, chorus, orchestra, voice, various chamber combinations and electronics. His style is highly eclectic synthesizing folk, popular, jazz, lyrical and modernist idioms. Carlson’s works have been performed at numerous concerts and festivals throughout the US and has had his works performed in Sweden, Belgium, China and Puerto Rico. He has composed for the Ways and Means Dance Company, the Univ. of Tennessee Dance Company, Circle Modern Dance and Momentum Dance Lab. He is the composer and co-founder of Art Moves, a site-specific dance production at the Knoxville Museum of Art and has produced a variety of multimedia concerts for the TVUUC Performing Arts & Lecture Series. Carlson holds composition degrees from Duke University (Ph.D.), the New England Conservatory (M.M.), and Central Washington University (B.M.). On a Beebe grant, he studied composition for a year in Stockholm, Sweden. He resides in Knoxville, TN and teaches at Sewanee: The University of the South.
