Influences
Everything and everyone. My first memory of walking down the hallway toward the bay window of our trailer where my mom's record player sang "The Hallelujah Chorus," The theme song for "Gummi Bears," moving all the time and spending hours in the car with just my imagination and my brother, every single song in "The Little Mermaid," my grandma's specials in church, my mom waking us up to singing "Rise and shine, and give God the glory - glory," my father's guitar playing and song writing, nature, Gene Kelly, Donald O'Conner and Debbie Reynolds in "Singing In The Rain," my late piano, reading "Clifford the Big, Red Dog," and feeling sorry for him, hurt, losing and gaining everything; Sarah McLachlin, Jewel, and Jennifer Knapp when I first learned to play guitar. Thank you to all of you people and things for your inspiration to me.
Artists I've been inspired by: Beth Orton, Jonie Mitchell, Radiohead, Damien Rice, Sun Kill Moon, Jeff Buckley, Tom Petty, Tom Waits, Pete Yorn, Johnny Cash, Billie Holiday, The Shins, Band of Horses, Ray LaMontagne, Mike Knott, Nick Drake, Van Morrison, Ryan Adams, Andrew Bird, U2, Aretha Franklin, Coldplay, Fiona Apple, Eliott Smith, David Bowie, Iron and Wine, REM, Kings of Convenience, M. Ward, James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel, Norah Jones, Feist, Brandi Carlile, Jamie Cullum, Imogen Heap, Jolie Holland, Sufjan Stevens, Aimee Mann, Al Green, John Coltrane, John Legend, Damien Jurado, David Gray, Dave Matthews, Death Cab for Cutie, Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, The Velvet Underground, Madeleine Peyroux, Rufus Wainwright, Steven Delopoulos, The Violent Femmes, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, and of course - The Beatles.

“…WHEN I GO TO ONE OF YOUR SHOWS, I FEEL LIKE I AM REALLY WATCHING SOMETHING IMPORTANT – YOU KNOW – AN ARTIST THAT IS SPECIAL AND COMING UP STRONG THAT THE WORLD DOES NOT KNOW ABOUT YET. NOT THAT I AM PREDICTING ANYTHING, WHAT THE HELL DO I KNOW ABOUT ANYTHING? BUT WHEN I AM AT ONE OF YOUR SHOWS, I HAVE THE STRONG FEELING THAT I AM AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME… I ALWAYS LIKE LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW AND THINKING THAT EVERYONE OUTSIDE IS A FOOL FOR NOT WATCHING...” Bob McDonald
I'm from the Bible Belt - which has its positive and negative effects. Sturgis, Michigan, to be exact; and no it's not the Sturgis where they hold the Harley motorcycle rallies - it's just not that cool. It was in this very small, and sometimes elitist community that I first realized my knack for writing songs. After my childhood piano flew off a moving truck and smashed all over Maple St, I thought it might be easier to write on an instrument you could carry with you wherever you went - and hopefully avoid the chances of it getting smashed (see blog titled, "The Day the Music Died"). I found that singing and writing was in my blood from an early age. The act was passed down from my singer songwriter father, Randy Thompson, who wrote until he passed away years ago, a mere hillbilly in the Arkansas mountains. From an early age, I've always known that music would always be this mystic, beautiful thing that I had to share with the world I lived in. In the last 13 years, I've become a prolific songwriter, I've worked with really great writers and producers, I've worked in the music video world, and I've written with and for kids. My most exciting project to date is finishing and mastering my own record to be released in the spring of 2010. Look for it, and in the mean time, come see me play on any given Tuesday night at Cranes Tavern in Hollywood.
"AN UNEXPECTED AND APPEALING VOICE... MUSIC (THAT) STRIKES ME AS INTIMATE AND DISARMING, THE SORT THAT WILL SOMEDAY LEAD HAPLESS DAY DREAMERS TO IMAGINE YOU'RE THE SORT OF PERSON THEY COULD BE CHUMS WITH DESPITE YOUR ENORMOUS FAME." M. Lee

I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!
Great show at Room 5 Monday night. I hadn't heard you sing live before and I'm now sold. The 4 of you, while crossing over the same stretches of music had such diverse styles, and I was really entertained. Thanks. -Randy-
