I am an inventor. I write in my notebook. Then I start building stuff, usually in software. I have been building an online game that is sure to elevate me two tax brackets higher than broke. I am also figuring out how to help people organize their knowledge and work. If you become my friend, I'll probably invite you over to the mcmanse that I will ruthlessly snatch from some bubble-eyed lunatic who bought it with no cash down in 2005.
I am an artist. I was once a goofball marketing man. I was a thorn in the side of pissant, wacko, future union organizers at UCLA. Now, my art is in how I experience the world every day. I have an affinity for irony and absurdity, media jamming, gonzo art, and the work of Marcel Duchamp. From great men such as Duchamp, I have learned to shed my guilt about failing to make money from art. After all, art is about twisting popular culture and common assumptions around for a higher cause, or, even better, for absolutely no reason at all but to piss the pissants off (and to exploit their misery for profit).
A example of what I am personally and spiritually experiencing right now:
I am a reader and writer. Science Fiction has pursued me ever since my dad introduced me to Heinlein and Asimov. I like detective novels as well, going back to Chandler and even Doyle. The plays of Albee and Beckett and the science fiction of Stephenson and Adams are a perfect fit for my personality. History is also something I love to read, especially the rise and demise of demented monsters. On the other side of the coin are the Freemasons. The great catalysts of science and democracy. I need to earn my third degree already.
I am a futurist. I see a future, and it has a lot going on. A horrible and great thing. I see it, a creeping singularity with a dark and a bright aspect. It is accelerating, yet we may not even notice its envelope. I often ask myself: should I be writing about it or building it? Problem is, if I build this idea out, it will certainly kill me, its creator. Damn. I think I just became a luddite.
I am a businessman. My grandfather told me to learn about investing. So I did. I have been an investor ever since that moment. I try to invest as if I own the whole business. Whether to accumulate part of one of these beasts is all about the numbers. And a few magical qualities. Such as the Steve Jobs Factor. The way I see it, businesses are living beings. Breathing, eating, storing, merging, dominating. I am even growing a couple of them in my secret lab.
I am a complete nutter. Spend a few minutes with me and you'll agree with this assertion.
Who I'd like to meet: Tom Anderson, Neil Stephenson, Josh Kaufman, Will Wright, Tori Amos, Douglas Engelbart, Selma Hayek, Ian Wright, Claude Jade, or any other actress appearing in a film by Truffaut, Tim Berners Lee, Trent Reznor, John Carmack, Bridgette Bardot, Tyler Cowen, Charlie Munger, The Architect of the Universe (if possible)
Thanks for being my friend! If you're a music fan, there's a new video on my Myspace page from a show I did earlier this year with PJ Harvey on bass and Scott Mathers on drums (click here to view). Also, over on my Web site, you can see a video of me playing with Frank Black on the Henry Rollins show on the IFC (click here to view). Otherwise, I'll be in touch about upcoming art and music shows. Maybe we will meet up at some point. Hope all is well with you!
