Jamaica- lead singer/lead and rythm guitar player/songwriter/wanna-be manager/goofball and any other thing I feel like doing or playing in any particular show......
Influences
So so very many... I'll try and list some starting with some of my early influences... Missing Persons, Frank Zappa, Talking heads, The Clash, Circle Jerks, Police, U2, Annie Lennox, Pat Bennitar, The beatles, Dave Mathews Band, Michael Franti featuring Spearhead, BB King, Albert Collins, Susan Tedeshi, Tab Benoit, Billie Holliday, Etta James, Stevie Ray Vaughan, my college professor (Mr Kroupa... yes he is related to the great Gene Kroupa), all the bandmates I've had over the years, all the poeple I've jammed with over the years, all the people I've seen playing over the years... well anyway there's many many more... too many to list right now.
Sounds Like
Take a heavy helping of blues, slap it with some funk, add a dash of jazz, dribble a bit of folk, add a slight bit of punk, and swirl it with some rock-n-roll... put it in a blender with poetic lyrical style, vocals powerfull and sweet, playing soulfully with finesse, and effervescent contagous energy. Drink down and enjoy!
After taking the last year or so off from playing out to take care of getting my business off the ground and getting rid of some things that were getting in the way of my music, I am READY to get back at it!!!! I am in search of musicians to form a group or two at this point. My drums, guitars and amps are all set up, I have been playing again and getting that itch to play with people again. With the drama gone from my life now, I have room for music again, and this time no one to question what it is that I am really doing... um it's called playing, making music, whatever... it is in me and can not be denied or stifled or it leads to an unhappy girl!
SOOOOOO If you are looking to jam and play well, go ahead and give me a shout, I will be checking here every few days anyway.
NOW FOR SOME BACKGROUND... I have played and studied music ever since I was five years old, sometimes being totally obsessed, other times, just playing once in a while, but I always have music in my ears and heart. I actaully suspect I WAS SINGING before that age, but that was how old I was when I got my first 4 string guitar, otherwise known as a euklele. I learned to tune it, and aplay a few songs, and went out in search of an audience... found it in the neighbors... I would knock on their doors and ask them if I could play them a song. I got a guitar a little later... then fast forward to when I was 11. My moterh bought herself a drumset... I was drawn to them, and became good at them in no time, just jamming to tapes on my own. By the time I was 12, my mother gave them to me, because I was better than her, and then she started teaching me songs to be her drummer. A band formed, I was the drummer, untill I was 16... we played several hundred gigs in that time, most of them in Phoenix after we moved there when I was 13. One of those gigs, I was 15, and we opened for the Gin Blossoms... as you probably know they went on to be a rather big band... was funny I had a really cool old chrome Ludwig drumset at the time, and their drummer, asked me to sell it to him, of course I said no. After I turned 17 I was invited to a program at Northand Poineer college, so I accepted, but only went for a year... though I did get to study vocals, and percussion under some really awsome professors. My percussion professor was a jazz master, so I learned a lot of good jazz techique, which helped me enormously, even though I had already been playing drums for a few years by then.... fast forward to when I was about 23... I had played guitar still occasionally when I was playing drums, but drums had taken all my attention... so at this age, it was not feasable to play drums... read BIG AND LOUD!!!!!... so I bought a guitar, and started madly writing music... I got better as time went on, by self study, and wathing other play, as well as better player helping me along the way... in 2005, I went through a few lineups in bandmates, and decided that I didn;t want to just play rhythm guitar, and sing, and write the songs, I also wanted to learn to play lead guitar... something I really never had ventured into much as it seemed so daunting... there's just so many notes on a fretboard... and I didn't know very many scales... I still don't, really, but I play by ear... I can hear the note in my head, and play it out... I play be feel, by the seat of my pants, by the audience response... by the next note, that feels so good, and by the harmony's that make you dance, and sing, and smile, and cry, sometimes all at the same time... I've seen this in action at one of my shows... and it was sheer pleasure for me and them both!!!! ........................................
