Jan's Interests
|
| General | Music of all kinds, deep philosophical questions, dreams & hopes, cannabis, pictures of women, vintage cars, tennis without keeping score. Hot baths, too. Photography, gardening and good food, too. | | Music | I like to write my own songs and play my own instruments; I like original artists. I'm not that interested in eating what I'm fed in the mass media. I support my friends who play their own original music. I still have ambitions concerning the composition of a string quintet. As far as guitar heroes goes, it's Mike Stern, who takes what I do as a musician to a "Hoe Nuvva Lebble," so to me he's the role model for reaching a sublime kind of skill on the instrument that allows his voice to come through, and it's the content of that voice's expression that ultimately matters, and I dig the content of what he's saying. There you have it, why Mike Stern is the greatest, most dazzlingly brilliant guitar player on the planet. I like the Three Kings of the Blues, too (Freddie, Albert and B.B.) and Vivaldi and Mozart. | | Movies | "Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo" is one of the best things I've seen in years. I liked "High Art" by Lisa Cholodenko, with Radha Mitchell in the lead role. I also thought "Grandma's Boy" was funny enough to watch over and over. Let's recognize "Pulp Fiction" for what it is: a total masterpiece, an Important Film. I reckon "Superbad" also belongs in that category, they'll be studying it in film school from now on. | | Television | I think most of what gets broadcast is awful B.S. and I try not to even watch it. Commercials are evil, really! But I must say I totally love The Simpsons. | | Books | "Commodify Your Dissent" is a good one.
"Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About" by Mil Millington -- funniest thing I've read in years, I hated getting to the end of it because I didn't want it to be over. | | Heroes | My Dad was an authentic hero of the best kind during World War II.
My friend Bill is a fine, fine man.
Mike Stern plays guitar the way I'd like to, if I practiced more.
Janice Scroggins has always been an inspiration to me by nature of the purity of her musicianship. |

Jan's Blurbs |
About me:
I'm a musician and producer, with a nice day job at the Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon, USA. My tiny independent record label is called Flying Heart Records, and I've produced dozens of projects including Chris Newman, also known as Snow Bud and the Flower People, also famous as Napalm Beach; a great jazz CD by the great jazz musician Eddie Harris; a bunch of my own stuff; a CD by The Gays called "Secret Society" and an album of Janice Scroggins playing Scott Joplin. Among others.
There's a web page all about me, it's part of the larger Flying Heart Records web site. Take a look.
I started out as a kid playing violin, back in Germany where I grew up. Now I play guitar and bass.
My excellent wife Maureen and I have three boys. They are awesome guys.
I dig old cars, and have a 1948 Cadillac Club Coupe that runs great. It gets a lot of looks when I drive it.

Who I'd like to meet:
Musicians, philosophers, dreamers, pot smokers. Left-wing radicals and conspiracy believers. Nice people who ever smile. Comedians. People high and low. Parents of kids with Down Syndrome. Hippies, Rastafarians, rockers, classical orchestral players.
