Band Members This project grew out of my love for the human voice. I’ve always wanted to sing… but woodwinds became my instrument of choice. I have always been inspired by the great voices of the jazz era. Back in 2000 something new & very special happened upon hearing “Grupo vocal Desandann” in Camaguey Cuba while working on our NFB documentary “Spirits of Havana”. We were knocked out by the vibrations that hit us & transported someplace special by their ethereal sound. Desandann continue to do this to audiences all over the world, even though they sing in Creole of their beautiful Haitian heritage they are capable of taking their music in many directions . On our first recording with Desandann “Cuban Odyssey” We got to know the depth of their Afro Cuban & Haitian roots. Now knowing them so much more we new we could go to the next step and hand them some very difficult modern jazz harmonies , rhythmically they have no equal, from Don Thompson’s challenging arrangements “Egberto” and “If you go away” to my arrangements- They are the heart and soul of this recording Once we began working together the next step was to collaborate with singer lyricist. Kellylee Evans, who helped complete this project. Im very pleased of the pieces we worked on together.
Influences FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 03, 2008 TORONTO'S OWN JAZZ VIRTUOSO JANE BUNNETT TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM ~ EMBRACING VOICES IN STORES AUGUST 5TH! (TORONTO, ON) - EMI is proud to announce that Jane Bunnett, the Toronto soprano saxophonist, flutist and bandleader, will release her new album Embracing Voices on August 5th, 2008. This new project is an exciting departure from Jane's past efforts, as it is the very first time that the majority of the tracks include vocals and guest vocalists, something that until now, Jane has never done. With an honorary doctorate from Queen's University, Jane Bunnett has built her career at the crossroads between Cuban music and jazz. Twice nominated for Grammy Awards, (Best Latin Jazz Recording 2002 for Alma de Santiago & 2003 for Cuban Odyssey), a fixture of nominations for Canada's Juno Awards, winner at Canada's Urban Music Awards for Best Global Recording in 2003 for Cuban Odyssey, and honoured with an appointment to the Order of Canada in 2004; Toronto's own jazz virtuoso has turned her bands into showcases for the finest musical talent from Canada, the United States and Cuba. Jane Bunnett is truly one of Canada's most valuable artistic resources. All of Jane's past recordings have been critically applauded and to date, she is a very recognizable name in the World Music & Jazz scene but has yet to crossover to mainstream audience, that is, until now! With Jane's love of the human voice as an instrument and past collaborations with a variety of vocalists at special events such as the yearly 'Global Divas' event, Embracing Voices is the very first time that all of the tracks include the vocal talents from some of the Jazz & World scene's best and includes songs in English, Creole and Spanish! From the jazz world, both established singer songstress Molly Johnson and up-coming jazz diva Kellylee Evans lend their unique vocal styling to the project. From the world scene, Cuban rap star artist Telmary and Grupo Vocal Desandann, an extraordinary Cuban vocal group of Haitian descent are included. This very unique and world renowned ensemble is composed mainly of second and third generation Haitians who were born and raised in Cuba, and bring their incredible history and lineage to this project with vocal performances that demand attention! Radio will feature first track "Serafina" featuring Kellylee Evans on vocals. Jane will perform with Grupo Vocal Desandann throughout Southern Ontario in July, with a major cross Canada tour planned for early 2009. Tracks 1. Jane Bunnett has become one of the foremost jazz musicians in Canada, and has gained recognition around the world for her improvising talents, technical proficiency, and writing and band leading abilities. Born and educated in Toronto, she trained as a classical pianist from 1975-78 (attaining Grade 10 Piano Honors), until tendentious forced a switch to woodwinds at the Royal Conservatory. In 1979 she began concurrent studies in jazz at York University, Toronto, inspired by her first exposure to jazz great Charles Mingus and Rahsaan Roland Kirk in San Francisco. This led to studies with pianist Barry Harris, flautists James Newton, Frank Wess and James Moody; then, having heard soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy’s music, she began to focus on that instrument also. A 1991 Canada Council grant enabled her to travel to Paris to begin studies with Lacy. Her first recording was an ambitious mix of Canadian and American players (the late pianist Don Pullen, tenor player and Ornette Coleman veteran Dewey Redman and Vincent Chancy, French horn) . This debut, In Dew Time, earned a Juno nomination in 1988. She toured Canada with Redman in 1991, and Australia with Pullen in 1992. A year later, Jane recorded New York Duets with Pullen, following it up with Live at Sweet Basil, then 1994's The Water is Wide which was chosen by The Village Voice as best record of the year. A mid-‘80's trip to Cuba with new husband Larry Cramer turned Jane’s musical world upside down, into a passion for the island’s wildly fertile musical culture and its people. Since then, Jane has explored the music in every corner of Cuba, and has absorbed the lessons and traditions with the same devotion she has given to her other work, seeking out musicians all over the island. Her tourism has now given way to an obsession with the island’s music. “Over the years I developed relationships with some of Cuba’s legendary musicians,” she recalls. “I’ve had a great opportunity to learn the music in the streets and in the homes of these people, and that’s what fueled my vision.” Many of these musicians have played in her exciting group, The Spirits of Havana. In 1991 she recorded Spirits of Havana, with a group of relatively unknown musicians (outside of Cuba) plus Cramer and Canadian bassist Kieran Overs, setting a trend to follow on subsequent recordings. This record was picked by the All-Music Guide as one of the top 300 jazz discs of all time and also captured a JUNO award. This was followed by the innovative Rendezvous Brazil-Cuba which featured the melding of Brazilian, Cuban and North American jazz music and musicians. In 1997 Jane completed Chamalongo. “Where Spirits of Havana was our initiation into this rich musical heritage,” Jane says, “it’s with Chamalongo that we’ve realized our musical dream to incorporate the total roots of Afro-Cuban music. All of my past musical experiences led me to Chamalongo – I know it was the most passionate and powerfully-felt record of my career.” The equally ground-breaking Ritmo + Soul (EMI Canada) was released in spring of 2000, presenting a fresh new twist on the pure Afro-Cuban/jazz of previous recordings. Jane and the band come full circle with several original compositions that create a powerful fusion of jazz, various musical influences of the band members, and the Cuban element with the soul of the spiritual music of North America and Africa. Ritmo + Soul won the 2001 Juno for best Global recording. Alma De Santiago, her latest recording – released in summer 2001on EMI Canada and Connector in Europe -- features the music of the Santiago de Cuba area, the crucible of Afro-Cuban music. It, too, was nominated for a Juno for best Global recording.. The Jazz Journalists Association also chose Alma De Santiago as a nominee for best Latin Jazz record of 2001-02. In 2002, Justin Time Records released Spirituals and Dedications which features the brilliant Dewey Redman, Stanley Cowell & Dean Bowman. The time spent in Cuba has allowed Jane to see firsthand the somewhat deprived conditions of the musical academies, and that led to Jane initiating a program to raise funds to take instrument parts and technicians to Cuba to repair instruments. This has further led to the establishment of a non-profit group, Spirit of Music, to continue on with this work and to broaden the scope with the goal to effect cultural exchanges with other Third World countries. Jane’s efforts have been documented in the Genie-nominated and award-winning NFB Film “Spirits of Havana” (2000), which has been shown at many film festivals and nationally on the CBC in 2001. Jane’s humanitarian concerns also led to her becoming a Canadian spokesperson for the Ban The Land Mines movement in 2000. Jane has consistently ranked highly in international jazz polls on soprano saxophone and flute. She was SOCAN’s Jazz Composer of the Year in 1995 and was awarded a Toronto Arts Award For Music in 2000. In 2001 and 2002, she was nominated as best soprano saxophonist by the Jazz Journalists Association, and chosen top flautist in the 2001 Downbeat Magazine Critic’s Poll in the Deserving of Wider Recognition category and won again in 2002; where she was also second in soprano sax. She also placed in the top ten in both of the Established Talent categories. The first National Jazz Awards in Canada in 2002 recognized her as the top jazz soprano saxophone player in the country. And, anytime the topic of “women in jazz” arises, Jane is prominent in such articles and discussions.. May of 2002 found Jane being awarded a most prestigious honor from the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, for her contributions and dedication to the development of Latin Jazz. The Smithsonian Institute has also selected her documentary film “Spirits of Havana” to be part of a series of films that is touring across America. 2003 started off with a bang. In January Jane’s 2002 release Alma de Santiago was nominated for a Grammy for best Latin Jazz Album, and that was just the beginning. Her latest release Cuban Odyssey was nominated for the best world music album for the Juno Awards in Canada, it won best world music album at the Toronto Urban music awards and was voted best Latin Jazz album by the American Jazz Writers Association at there awards in New York City in the summer of 2003. In December of 2003 Cuban Odyssey was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Awards for best Latin Jazz Album. Oh yes Jane did put out a contemporary Jazz CD called Spirituals & Dedications that was nominated for best contemporary Jazz Album at the 2003 Juno. 2004 sees a new CD from Jane and producer, partner and musician Larry Cramer called RED DRAGONFLY that features the world renowned Pendereski Sting Quartet. To date this CD has gained nothing but glowing reviews form around the world. 2004 Jane was honored by Can west global and Cool FM for her contribution to Canadian Jazz, and in early 2005 Jane received Canada’s highest civilian award the Order of Canada. Soon after her order of Canada investiture Jane’s latest CD “Radio Guantanamo” featuring New Orleans Blues legend Jump’in Johnny Sansone won the Juno for Best Contemporary jazz album. Jane continues to perform at jazz clubs and festivals and concert halls and for broadcast throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and Cuba, with her groups, and as a featured solo artist. She has toured Canada several times in the past ten years, from the Pacific to the Atlantic and as far north as Whitehorse, Yukon. She has also done considerable touring throughout the United States. It is her formidable talents and sincere dedication to performing and to jazz that have brought about all her well-earned recognition, and which have afforded her an important place in jazz and in the ears, hearts and minds of music fans everywhere.

As of 3 years ago New Orleans was my home. I was abruptly uprooted as a result of Hurricane Katrina. So you can only imagine how heavy my heart feels this weekend watching the city preparing for the possibility of being hit by a similar sized storm. Yet I am filled with gratitude as I know that I am equipped with the ability to help those that are going to need assistance as a result of the storm. No matter where this storm hits, those there are going to need help.
I am proudly announcing that I am coordinating concerts/seminars around the United States to benefit victims in need. This is resulting from my recently published book (The Remains of Hurricane Katrina), and my dream of one day being able to help victims of all types. The first of these events is being planned in New Mexico to benefit their domestic violence victims.
I am asking all singers, bands and anyone that can help with these events to contact me as soon as possible. We need all the participation and help that we can acquire. The events are going to have to occur as soon as possible. Please refer to my site for further information or contact me as soon as possible, no matter who you are, if you want to help.
It is true, only good results from helping others. It makes dreams come true.

First, I want to thank all of you who have stepped up offering your help and your encouragement.

In August of 2005, I had no idea as to whether the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina washing my home away forever was the start of my freedom to live a happy and normal life, or the end of my ever being able to have anything at all. It actually became my chance to make a dream come true that I have held in my heart over 20 years, which is to be able to help victims of all types with my story.

My dream to help victims of all types with my story is beginning to come alive with the offer of help from singers and bands in all genres, companie and venues, etc. And, I am extremely happy to announce that many who are in no need at all for extra publicity are offering to help. They state that they are offering because they know that victims need to see as many people as possible show them hope.
Last but not least, I have decided that the profits from sales of books is going to go into bringing the seminars to as many victims as possible. So, I am asking that if you cannot do anything outside of ordering a book for a victim, that is enough. Remember, The Remains of Hurrican Katrina is a story of survival through disasters is life. Please offer this story of hope to anyone you know that needs to know that they can get through anything in life. If you contact me when you order the book, I will list you for all to see on my site as helping victims throughout the world.
As I said, any help that you can offer will be more than appreciated throughout the world! If you have a friend that would benefit from this message, please forward this message to them.
And, to make sure that the world knows you are helping, please contact me so that I can list you as one of the singers, bands, venues, companies or people helping to offer hope to victims.
