Influences
My poem-songs are influenced from coming up through the poetry ranks at the legendary Nuyorican Poets Cafe and from listening to Jeff Buckley many, many times at the Sin-e Cafe in the early 90's. I've created collaborative works with fabulous dancers (Ori Flomin, Melanie Maar, Antonio Ramos, Rokafella, Alyson Wishnovsky, Sarah Williams, among others) and we've shown work at cafes and theaters all over NYC, Montreal and the Bronx. I've also created LOTS of performance opportunities for other artists -- singers, musicians, poets, choreographers and dancers -- and they ALL influenced and INSPIRED me to make new work. I tend to create melodies that float between poetry and song; vocally, my voice falls into an old-school 1940s flavor. Friend and dancer KJ Holmes said my work "conjures word as sound and sound as poetics," which is such a nice thing to have received in an email message, you wouldn't believe.
