that kinda thing ya know!
The year is 1988, the month is June, its Friday the third day of the month and a child is born. But there are complications with the birth, the child is born covered in a caul and as a result the babies vocal chords are burned by the fluid contained within.
That child was Janet Grogan, and little did she know that as a result of these complications, she would be blessed. Because of the “burning” of her vocal chords she would end up with the husky and sexy voice you hear in her music today.
As a child, on no particular day while watching the film “The Bodyguard” on TV and witnessing the vocal prowess of one Whitney Houston, Janet was introduced to her calling. Later that year after cheekily “borrowing” her brother’s BoyzIIMen album, she heard the song “One Sweet Day” and things would never be the same again. The family were engulfed in the music of The Beatles, early Motown and many more from the 60s era, due to her parents record and tape collection.
After partaking in school choirs as a child, and some Karaoke nights on family holidays including one night on the home karaoke machine, her parents took the decision to have Janet begin vocal coaching at the Rhapsody School of Music in Dublin. Under the tutelage of Áine Kerrigan, Janet’s voice would blossom and grow into what you hear now.
As the end of Secondary School neared, Janet would audition for the famous, Ballyfermot “Rock School” in Dublin. She got through the audition with flying colours and was offered a place the following Semester. Here she would begin to turn years of notebooks and doodles into songs and would gain further vocal coaching from Candra Sleeman. However all was not well, Candra recognized an as yet unnoticed problem with Janet’s voice, and advised a trip to a throat specialist. Upon inspection the specialist discovered that due to the problems in birth with Janet’s voice that her weakened vocal chords had developed nodules. A treatable problem, initially a surgical fix, surgeons refused to operate due to the delicate nature of her career choice. This problem would also cause Janet to miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime, a week of “Band Camp” involving music students from all over Europe in Hammelburg, Germany, including students from the internationally recognised PopAkademie, in Mannheim. The only treatment was rest, and literally NO singing over a period of 5 months. The silver lining to this was that in this time Janet would develop her piano and guitar skills, and write more songs in that time, than she had in total up to that point.
In summer of 2008, upon graduating from the “Rock School” with a Diploma in Popular Music, Janet would gain the opportunity to go and study at the PopAkademie in Mannheim. As she had missed out on the previous German excursion, she grabbed the opportunity with both hands. From the very first day at the PopAkademie, Janet found herself lucky to be matched up with an outstanding group of Musicians and continues to play with the same guys to this very day, they are, Jonathan Kluth on Lead Guitar, Christoph “Mr. Tight” Klemann on Keys, Sebastian Brödner on Lead Bass, and last but by no means least, Sebastian Rotard on Drums.
Together these four phenomenal musicians make up The Janet Grogan Band, and with their support, Janet Grogan will be taking to stages all around the World, so watch this space…
