Janita started her career in her native Finland at the early age of 13. An overnight success, she became a celebrity and toured the country extensively for two years. During that time she graced the pages of all the major Finnish magazines and appeared on dozens of TV shows and radio programs. To chase her dreams of having an international career as a singer and to free herself from expectations and scrutiny that comes with major success in a small country, she moved to New York at age 17.
Today, Janita calls Brooklyn her home. NY continues to inspire and fascinate her, though she also deeply identifies with her Finnish roots. Being torn between two worlds has in effect become a theme in her life and her music. Like her dual nationality, Janita's music is a also a hybrid of her two main influences: soul and alternative. Her vocals and musical choices, deeply rooted in American soul music that she grew up listening to, are also colored with an impulsive expression and edge stemming from her love for alternative music. In her artistry is a mixture of opposites--darkness and hope, sensitivity and rawness, courage and frailty. Janita's deeply personal lyrics, her exceptional voice and her powerful stage presence have earned her thousands of fans all over the world.
Janita recently completed a bold and honest new album, Haunted, which was released in Finland in September 2009, to be followed by releases in the US, Japan and Europe. On this album, she delves into darker territory than ever before, both lyrically and musically. Haunted displays the natural growth of a true artist, not afraid to lay herself bare.
