Virtuoso Dutch guitar player Jan Wouter Oostenrijk completed his professional Jazz guitar studies at the conservatory of Amsterdam as student of Wim Overgaauw in 1995. He got a degree for classical guitar as well and took lessons in Flamenco music and Arabic melody. At the open university he also studied Arabic language which enables him to express himself and sing in the Northafrican dialect.
JWO was part of succesful Moroccan formations like Raïland (winner “Gouden Notenkraker “ award in 1996 ). Nowadays he plays with his own formation and combines his experiences with the Northafrican music-culture with his own European roots. JWO’s guitar playing is melting excellent with Arabic Sharki, Raï and Chaâby, his improvisatitions move from jazzy bebob lines to blues to oriental makam like playing . Together with his band they developed an impressive, innovating crossover between music cultures wich you could call Maghreb jazz.
The band released 2 albums- Open up your eyes (2000) and ‘Maghreb Jazz Guitar’(2007)
JWO is not only successful in Holland, he played at big international festivals in Morocco like Rabat, Casablanca and Marrakech. Beside that he performed in Sudan and Egypt and got a radioindy "Golden artist" award for his album Maghreb Jazz guitar in the USA.
Nowadays his Maghreb Jazz is world wide available and source of inspiration for new music movements !!
