   The Jarrett Meeker Foundation's Blurbs
About me:
Who is the JMF? The Jarrett Meeker Foundation is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization. An ALL volunteer organization. Tax ID# 33-0372440. When was the JMF established? In July 1987, in memory of Jarrett Meeker after his accidental death on April 27, 1987. Who was Jarrett Meeker? Jarrett was an eight-year old third grader at Murdock Elementary School in the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District in San Diego County, CA. He was an active, fun-loving little boy who loved nature and all living things and was nicknamed the Little Zookeeper. This affection to nature was not limited to animals; he had a genuine concern for people and in particular, for other children who had less than he had. Why does JMF exist? JMF supports educational programs relevant to the environment, conservation and wildlife. These programs are offered to children and young adults throughout San Diego County. What is the JMF Mission Statement? The mission of the Jarrett Meeker Foundation is to serve the children and young adults of San Diego County by supporting educational programs significantly relevant to environmental and wildlife conservation. These programs have an optimistic and irrevocable impact to the communities we serve and to the existence of our organic world. It is through these programs we will insure a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of those we serve and help to improve the condition of our natural world. What is the JMF Vision? As the Jarrett Meeker Foundation approaches 25 years of service, it is our vision to transition into the leading foundation of its kind in San Diego County. The Foundation will achieve the goals of this vision by broadening our list of beneficiaries, requiring beneficiaries to demonstrate the impact of our support, and enhancing our professionalism, administration and faculties. The core of this Foundation is the partners who share and support our aspirations. The alignment of our partners ensure that we will continue to endow programs that benefit the children and young adults in our communities who desire to understand, appreciate and improve the natural world. What are JMF's goals? 1. To expand our support of educational programs to benefit children and young adults throughout San Diego County relating to wildlife, conservation and the environment. 2. To increase and develop our resources to ensure the continuity of our work 3. To broaden our list of beneficiaries. 4. To work with partners who share and support our aspirations. How does JMF intend to accomplish the above goals? 1. Our enthusiastic and dedicated board members will be completely knowledgeable about JMF and its goals. As ambassadors of JMF, they will be able to tell others they meet about JMF and the work that it does and encourage people to donate and support our efforts. 2. Our board will be comfortable with asking others to help support the work of JMF. 3. JMF will seek out those in San Diego who share our mission to educate children about the environment and who want to partner with us. 4. JMF will continue to increase its support of our Sunset Safari annual fundraising event. 5. JMF will have a strong public relations campaign to let the public know who we are and what we are doing through a newsletter, press releases, video presentations and our ambassador board members. What is the meaning of the JMF logo? Our logo originated from a vision that Judy Meeker had the day of her son's accident. She was in the sheriff's car, following the ambulance, when she saw Jarrett, surrounded by animals, doing what he enjoyed-fishing. He told her that he was okay, and not to worry. Who does JMF currently benefit? 1. La Mesa-Spring Valley School District 2. Cajon Valley Union School District 3. San Diego School District through our partnership with CREATE AT UCSD 4. Polinsky Children Center, temporary shelter for abused, neglected children 5. San Diego City School, Central Elementary 6. Sevick School in El Cajon for preschool children with disabilities 7. Wild Animal Parks Education Department, Conservation Corps 8. San Diego Zoo Education Department, Zoo Corp Program 9. YMCA programs throughout the North County and Temecula areas. 10. Camp Pendleton Mary Fay Elementary School. 11. Upper division college students majoring in the College of Sciences. What specific programs does JMF support? 1. Outreach Assembly Programs: JMF provides Title I schools with the opportunity to have the San Diego Zoological Society Educators and trainers from both Wild Animal Park and from the Zoo bring wild animals and interactive fun right to the students at their schools! We current support of $14,050 for programs at both parks. 2. Special Needs Assembly Programs: These programs are designed by the Zoo to fit the needs of our beneficiaries. JMF currently funds $1,260 programs for these beneficiaries. a. Polinsky Children Center: They receive a monthly assembly program where the zoo comes to them in a specially designed program to introduce these children to a part of nature they have never seen. b. Sevick Center School in El Cajon is a preschool for children with vary disabilities and handicaps. The foundation provides two specially designed animal encounter assemblies over two days. 3. Zoo Summer School: JMF provides scholarships for disadvantaged students in grades 1-6 to attend week-long, half-day Summer School at the Zoo. Many of the students who are selected might not have an opportunity to at attend zoo summer school or even visit the zoo except for the foundation's scholarships. Selection of the student participants and bus transportation to and from the San Diego Zoo are provided by the school districts. During the classes, the students blend discovery, fun, and friendship through behind-the-scenes visits, games, crafts, and instruction by Zoo educators. It is a very special week for these children and very often a highlight for their summer. This past summer we paid for 150 children to attend at a cost of $116.00 per student, totaling $17,400. 4. Wild Animal Park Summer Camp: JMF provides scholarships to students to attend summer camp at the Wild Animal Park, where they learn about a different habitat each day and participate in up-close animal encounters, songs, art projects, and hands-on experiments. This summer we sponsored 10 Animal Encounter program trips for 750-1000 YMCA students in Palomar, Oceanside and Temecula, to attend 5 half-days at the Park. We also provided 20 Park Camp scholarships for children from Pala, Rincon and San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians. JMF grants $5,000 in funds to cover the cost of these WAP programs. 5. Central Elementary School's Night Owls: This year JMF partnered with San Diego Unified School District's Central Elementary School to sponsor the third grade's overnight field trip to the Night Owls program at the Wild Animal Park. We funded all of the students who wanted to go - 133 at a cost of $95 each for a total of $12,369. The school raised the funds for chaperones and transportation. 6. Conservation Corps Program: "Kids Teaching Kids" at the Wild Animal Park is designed to prepare low-income students between the ages of 12 and 16 for future employment and leadership opportunities. It helps the children build communication skills and career goals and teaches them how to interact and respond appropriately in a work environment. JMF provides 25 scholarships at $150 each, totaling $3,750. 7. Upper Division College Scholarship: This scholarship gives financial support to San Diego State University, University of California at San Diego, or University of San Diego undergraduate students majoring in the College of Sciences, who plan to pursue a career that reflects the mission of the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. An annual award of $5000 is given to a student or students chosen by JMF. Initial funding of the scholarship was provided through the generosity of William T. and Norma M.Verbeck. 8. Navy/Marine Families: This year JMF is partnered with the San Diego Al Bahr Shrine and San Diego Scottish Rite to sponsor a BBQ at Mary Faye Pendleton Elementary School on the Camp Pendleton Marine Base. We are joining with the school's PTA to make this family BBQ a memorable event by funding a Wild Animal Park animal presentation. How does JMF raise funds? JMF accepts monetary donations year-round from individuals, families and corporations who want to support our activities. We also hold an annual fundraising event, Sunset Safari, in the fall with a silent and live auction as well as live entertainment and free food and beverage samples from San Diego's finest restaurants, breweries and wineries.
