Sounds Like
TOO MUCH BASS. DIRTY BEATS. Garbage. $1 records from the 70's and 80's. 25 cent records from a cardboard box on the sidewalk or at Village Valeur. Mouldy basements. Sweaty loft parties. lungs shaking. bootys pumping. HUMPING. BAD TROUBLE. Babies biting electricity. Teenagers raving. Monsters eating mirrorballs. Electrobots shorting out. Acid. Bassbins rumbling. Subwoofers vibrating. A DJ with musical genre ADD?
Jas Nasty, aka Jasmine, is definitely an eclectic dj, to say the least.
In a club setting, she most often spins booty/ghettotech, Miami Bass, Baltimore club, breaks, and electro. She also plays dubstep, grime, 2-step, ragga, dirty south, hip-hop, 80's electro, new-wave, freestyle, and rock.
Her roots as a dj were playing dub and roots reggae, trip-hop, hip-hop, and funk, and her love for these sounds can always be heard in any set.
As a DJ, she has had the pleasure of playing alongside or opened for:
Kool Herc, Kode 9 (UK), Skream (UK), Shackleton (UK), Starkey & Dev 79 (Slit Jockey/Philly), The Syrup Girls (NYC), Ghislain Poirier, Lynne T (L.O.E), Pheek, Killa Jewel, Dj Mini, Jordan Dare, Sean Kosa, Dj Bliss, One Speed Bike, Alice & the Serial Numbers, Black Market, Krinjah, Maysr, VANDER, Dj Mana, Dj Static, Dj LUV, Dj Kobal & Sarcastic.
Jasmine's DJ adventures began in 2001 at Trent Radio, the Trent University college radio station in Peterborough, Ontario. Holding down various weekly music shows, she became a part of the community radio team for years to come. Her favorites were her dub and roots reggae show, as well as Mixed & Twisted, which was an experiment in simultaneously mixing and layering as many sounds as humanly possible. Regularly playing parties and bars in and around Peterborough, Jasmine moved to Montreal in July of 2004, entering a new world of musical possiblities.
She founded, designed, promoted, and was a resident dj for Women on Wax Montreal , along with Cyan and Rue, since March 2005, contributing greatly to raising the profile of a number of talented new and veteran female dj's from Montreal and abroad.
Besides the Women on Wax events, Jasmine has played a number of key events and venues in Montreal including Under Pressure 2006, The Sala Rossa, Academy, Blizzarts, Blue Dog, Salon Daome, Zoobizarre, Cafe Chaos, Buddha Bar, Station C, Saphir, The Green Room, Boa, Chez Roger, Centre Fractal, and Missy Bar.
In Ottawa, she has played at Barrymore's Music Hall, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Cafe Dekcuf, and MTL Nightclub.
A consistent involvement with independent circus artists, and circus cabarets/parties has also led her to collaborate with Cirque Du Soleil, Carnaval Carmagnole, and Duo Hoops, to name a few, often making personalized musical mixes for artists' performances.
Whether DJing in urban clubs, graffitti conventions, or underground loft parties, Jasmine's love for collecting and playing music continues to propell her into new and exciting environments, and her ability to meet the challenge of varied audiences has gained her widespread respect throughout both Canada and the U.S.
