| About Jason Sparks |
|
Jason Sparks began his professional music making career in 1998 after posting his first demo, a 3-track TDK compact cassette, to Breakbeat pioneers Botchit and Scarper Recordings. He was offered a signing within 2 days of putting his cassette in the post.
His first release was his seminal ‘Left To Live For’ track that hit the Breaks world by storm in 1999. From then up until the beginning of 2004 Jason pioneered his own brand of Breakbeat and Downtempo music with his inspired, cutting-edge style being embraced by many including BBC Radio 1’s Annie Nightingale and the late John Peel.
During that period, every release of Jason’s seemed to get 5 star reviews, single of the week, EP of the month status in the music press. His ‘Secret Place’ single from his debut album ‘Heroes and Villains’ made it to no. 1 of the Capital Dance Charts for 2 weeks running. Other successes included the Rock influenced ‘I’m In You’ track and the warming ‘Gangsters’ piece that’s been rinsed on many a radio show.
After his album came out in early 2004 Jason moved to London and disappeared off the musical radar due to an irresponsible attitude towards partying and getting mashed at every moment possible. But last year, Jason chose to calm down a bit and returned to his studio to make music again but this time things were different from before.
After deciding he made his best music when he wasn’t sure what music he was meant to be making, Jason reverted back to that approach and last year began working on new music that is very different from his Breakbeat antics of old.
Taking influences from an unusual selection of styles including Broken Beats, Techno, Kuduro, early Jungle and various Ghetto Funk, Jason has stitched together his new style and according to everyone who’s heard it, it’s sounding pretty special.
Although Jason is still good friends with Botchit and Scarper Recordings he is also looking for other labels to release his new sound on.
DJ wise, in 2004 Jason headlined Budapest’s ‘Breaks Heroes’ event, making it onto page 3 of the Hungarian Times. He has spun the previous 2 years at Estonia’s ‘Sun Dance Music Festival’, played Club Essential in Riga, Latvia, and has played a number of London’s well know clubs including Herbal, 93 Ft East, The Telegraph and the old Bridge and Heaven. He has also done 2 DJ mixes for BBC Radio 1 and he hosted a weekly radio show on iBreaks radio.
What the press said:
"God I love it when something this good comes along. When an artist, an album, a production lives up to the hype. Finally the phrase cinematic soundscapes runs true. Jason Sparks has created a whole new side to breakbeat. He's found the beauty within the bass. And it's staying with me as I stumbled home from a nights clubbing I found myself hearing Sparks fly
in my head. His moody melancholy on 'Pornography', his dance
credentials on 'I'm In U' and his subtle sweetness on 'Secret Place'. Go get and witness a velvet revolution in breakbeat. Oh and watch out Moby Inc - here's someone actually doing the business. 5/5"
-- DJ magazine reviewing 'Hereos and Villains' LP
"Best yet is the tough but tender coup de grace from Jason Sparks 'Our People' which is a vital single in its own right"
-- Muzik magazine, March '00 issue reviewing 'Urban Funk Breaks EP' with a 5/5 rating.
"Don't know where they keep getting them from, but Botchit seem to have an unerring knack for uncovering funk-arse breaks-loving muthafuckas and Jason Sparks is the latest in that line"
-- DJ magazine, Spring ‘04 reviewing the 'Jason Sparks EP' with a 5/5 rating
“The Story of O” is a track of mammoth proportions, as carefully constructed melodies burst from sublime melancholy to explosive tragedy, taking in distant piano, strings & brass, riding on crunching breaks & thrashing cymbals, complementing & driving home Siren’s powerful vocals.
-- DMC update, February 2006, Essential Leftfield Tune 5/5
