Jason Alan Dewey was born in 1990 in Lincolnshire, and after a childhood of performing, now studies composition at Birmingham Conservatoire with Robin Grant.
Taking some inspiration from Serialism, Jason is currently exploring chance music, music based on systems and noise as music. Sometimes described as philosophical, Jason’s music tends to be conceptual, usually exploring the more avant-garde areas of music.
Recent works include a conceptual series based on the idea of recycling old sheet music to provide new sounds; several electronic pieces (available on his blog) and a string quartet written by chance.
Quartet - For String somethingorother. Performed by Chroma Ensemble.
Music with Phone Numbers - Electronic piece where all aspects of writing are controlled by a set of phone numbers.
Relakse - Lift Music.
Wandering Wind - Piece written as a graphic score. See blog post: http://jasondeweycomposer.blogspot.com/2009/11/wandering-wind.html
Wandering Ink - Piece written as a graphic score. See blog post: http://jasondeweycomposer.blogspot.com/2009/11/wandering-ink.html
Dwindling Stone - Piece for Wind Orchestra, dedicated to David Green. Conducted by Guy Woolfenden and performed by the Birmingham Conservatoire Junior Wind Orchestra.
Using similar chance techniques to my String Quartet, everything from the length of the piece, how many sections there would be, how long each section would be, right down to how many motifs in each section, how many notes in each motif, the rhythms of said motifs and whether or not there would be rests in-between motifs, sections, and decisions like whether or not an instrument would be playing or not in a given section, were determined by chance. In fact, the only things NOT determined by chance were the dynamics and the articulation. I thought that was a little over the top. The title was chosen using a Random Novel Generator, which I felt suited the piece.
