Bio by Erik Mallo: I met Jason Arnold on May 12, 2001, when he played a show at "Hyde and Zeke Records" with his brother Joey under the name DNA, which consisted of horns and drums only. The record store was barely filled, looking more like the setting for a librarian convention than an in-store music show. I thought to myself, Wow! This is awesome. At no show had I ever seen people that looked like this. This was, by no means, your standard "show" though. At certain times throughout the night, I was reminded of Napalm Death: brutal and intense. Ah, yes, when my acquaintanceship with free jazz was still in its infancy, thus, fresh, intriguing and exciting. Sometime towards the end of the set, along with some guy there, I began to play chairs, the floor and a clarinet mouthpiece that I happened to have in my guitar case. It's a good thing that I had it there that night. Otherwise, I strongly believe I would not have had the opportunity to befriend Jason Arnold. It was a good night and I went home, at times cracking a small smile to myself and at other times, just downright laughing. A week later we all played together for an hour at an open mic night. This is probably still one of my favorite, if not, favorite nights of our playing. Jason Arnold will disagree, but to me, that night we sounded as if we had been playing together for years. I felt it was uncannily telepathic; everything clicked appropriately at just the right moments. I sat in his car later that night as he went on and on about music, making me lists of albums as I just sat there listening. It was a trend that would continue and one that I truly enjoy: him enthusiastically talking, me intently listening. And that started the beginning of a vast musical experience and a friendship filled with great dinner conversation and delirious laughter. Jason Arnold has a lot of music in his very comforting, tight space apartment in Palatka, Fl. The apartment is located next to some sort of mental institution. There was a dead body once in his backyard. Fortunately, he was out of town. Jason also has a lot of books, movies, paintings, instruments, and 2 cats. He has a lot of weird stories to tell about Palatka, ghosts, supernatural occurrences, and just plain creepy stuff. I like eating Thai food at The Thai House with Jason and his wife, Brandy Arnold. I also like eating at Niko's Italian Restaurant, where Jason Arnold adds green peppers, mushrooms and all sorts of other sides to his main dish. He says please and thank you a lot. He is a very polite and congenial man. Jason once took me to a hypnotist show at a creepy Palatka fair. His wife shoots hysterical down syndrome videos of Jason and I playing in empty racquetball courts and obscure areas in the middle of the night in locations around Northern Florida. I've never had the opportunity to witness Mr. Arnold teaching in his classroom, but I imagine he must be a really f****** good and fun teacher. I would have loved to have him as a fourth grade teacher, bringing to class unusual and confusing music and giving assignments where I can write about how the snare drum sounds like a tiger pouncing, but the saxophone like a gorilla and a duck fighting in the forest. Now, however, hes teaching high school. Bless the good children of the corn. One night, after playing an upsetting radio show on Orlando college radio, Jason and I drove back to Palatka down dark, creepy country roads and I feared he would disappear from the passenger seat, leaving me alone in the car at night on those creepy roads. He didnt disappear. Instead, as usual, he began to scare me with chilling stories. We spoke of roadside zombies and non-existent people and it was all captured on tape. Jason Arnold released this on his home label. Well often debate about improvisation vs. composition and about free jazz in general. We don't really agree much with each others viewpoint.
