the guitar has always been a deeply personal instrument for me as composer, guitarist, and artist. My favorite guitarists have always been musicians who have made impacting, original statements using the instrument as a vehicle to express creativity, intelligence, soul, and other sometimes intangible elements. As i mature as a player, composer, and educator, i can see how my experiences have shaped my relationship to the instrument and with each day feel lucky to be able to get up in the morning, or sometimes late afternoon.... and play music alone, with friends, and with aspiring artists. as a student and Sensei in the Japanese Art of Aikido, i can see many parallels between music and the study of Morihei Ueshiba's Martial Way of Harmony. i approach my training on the mat with the same mindset i approach music. The elements of discovery, power, harmony, rhythm, flow, movement, stillness, breath, tradition, new territory, and creativity have kept me coming back to both of these ways for the last bunch of years, and when all is said and done, i am looking forward to the continuing process of personal growth through these mediums.
