Louisville, Kentucky native Jason Lawrence is a drummer with degrees in jazz performance from the New School in Manhattan, and Economics from Washington University in Saint Louis. He has played in such bands as Let Sleepers Lie, Speak Low, The Middle Men, Fire the Saddle, Riddle of Steel and the Caledonia Mission. He has studied music at Washington University, Bellarmine University in Louisville, The University of Louisville, and The New School in Manhattan, New York. He has studied jazz with such greats as Carl Allen, Ari Hoenig, Chico Hamilton, Buster Williams, Reggie Workman, Billy Harper, Charli Persip, Rory Stuart, Ben Street, Francesca Tanksley, Jason Tiemann, and Todd Hildreth. He moved to New York in 2005 to finish his jazz studies at the New School, from which he graduated in 2007. He is currently a member of El May, Balthrop Alabama, The Ne'er Do Evers, the Outside/In Trio, and he performs and records with Tucker Rountree, John Whitaker, A Century of Aeroplanes, Our Man Jenga, The Caledonia Mission and more. He has also recently performed with such established New York acts as Dawn Landes, Lady Rizo and the Assettes, NLX:Natasha Alexandra, The Kelsey Jillette Group, and Emiko. In 2007, he made his New York theater debut with a four week stint at the Flea Theatre drumming and acting in Julian Sheppard's play Los Angeles, directed by Adam Rapp. He has performed with Moby a couple of times recently, including a short set as the last act to perform at Mo Pitkin's closing party in the lower east side of Manhattan. In February and March of 2008, Jason toured Australia for 5 weeks with El May, where the band opened for such artists as Feist, Explosions in the Sky, and the Brunettes. He has recorded drums on several tracks for forthcoming albums by both El May and Caithlin De Marrais. Jason is currently playing and working in NYC, while writing music for an upcoming project under the name In the Avenues.
