My influences have mostly been writers. Early on I loved Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Peter Gabriel, and U2, and in more recent history I lost my heart to Rich Mullins, Randy Stonehill, Mark Heard, Bill Mallonee and Pierce Pettis. So for me it's been more about the lyric or the idea behind a song. In recent history I've been moved by Daniel Lanois, Coldplay, Aimee Mann, Andrew Peterson, Martin Sexton, Jill Phillips, and Over The Rhine.
Sounds Like
I'd like to think that I sound uniquely like myself... but practically speaking, reviewers and fans have compared my work to Bebo Norman, Coldplay, Aimee Mann, Keane, Jill Phillips, Sara Groves, Andrew Peterson, Randy Stonehill, and Jars of Clay.
A LITTLE ABOUT ME...
One of the first things you should know about me is that I suffer from a speech handicap known as stuttering. But instead of it being a liability, I've found it to be a great asset in the work I do. Our weakness, if we let it, can give us access to a strength beyond ourselves. Over and over we see and hear in the bible that it's through our weakness that God's strength is perfected in our lives.
ABOUT MY MUSIC... well now... let's see... I'll just say that I love music. Always have. I'm always amazed at how it continues to move and change me after all these years. I truly believe that God gave us music to help keep our hearts working properly. We all know that our hearts can take a beating and get calloused from time to time, but music still has the power to move us and make us feel joy and give meaning to our struggles. I've gotten a lot from music, and wanted to give back. That's why I make music.
But what excites me even more than music is the work I get to do serving AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children through World Vision as one of their artists. I just returned from Africa and posted a series of blogs about my journey there, so be sure to check the archives! For more on my music and how you can make a difference in the life of a child, check out my site: www.jasongraymusic.com.
It was great to hear you live again last night. It had been way too long since the last time we managed to make it to one of your concerts. Hearing More Like Falling in Love live was amazing! We can hardly wait until the new album.
