FEATURED RELEASE
JASON LINDNER NOW vs. NOW' AVAILABLE NOW!
"I'm not sure I want to describe the music as much as I want to invite people to listen to it. Because this is the sound of New York City — poetry and hip-hop from the streets, a ride on the D train going express to the Bronx, the tension and release of a cosmopolitan society where people of all shades live together: the sound of now.” – Joshua Jackson, WBGO / NPR.
Jason Lindner is a multi-talented artist who began playing piano by ear at the age of three. As the years followed Lindner has made a name for himself as a multi-keyboardist, bandleader, composer and arranger. Chick Corea described him as a “musical universe”. Lindner earned acclaim for his long-running Big Band (the Ensemble), whose raw energy earned them a release on Corea’s label. He has also gained acclaimed as a musical director, producer and educator. Determined never to limit himself to one title in the music business, Jason Lindner has worked to conquer them all.
That’s not surprising of the Brooklyn native, as a child his favorite musical pieces were the theme from Star Wars and his own interpretation of Beethoven's 5th, a definite indication of his desire to master the complexities of sound. Even before formal lessons, Lindner could hear the amazing possibilities in music. He was encouraged by his musical family, his father was a pianist and vocalist, his mother, a musical theater amateur turned yoga instructor, and his sister, a singer/songwriter.
He tried his hand at several different musical instruments but, Lindner never quite strayed far from the piano. He learned by ear the recordings of Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, B.B. King, John Coltrane, and Gene Harris, focusing on jazz and blues. As his talent improved, he expanded his reach exploring other musical cultures as he explains, “Living in NYC I think it was only a matter of time before I started playing "Latin" music, while trying to dig deeper into the history and roots of jazz. This led me to realize that they stem originally from Africa, mixing with different influences to create all the different African-based or fused music we know today (which is pretty much most everything you probably listen to west of Europe)”.
While in high school, at Music & Art High School (aka LaGuardia) Lindner met many of his current musical colleagues. It was also during this time met his guru for the next few years, the esteemed Barry Harris "I've had other teachers throughout the years who have all helped form the musician I am today, but two really stand out for me, the latter being the great Chris Anderson who had profound influence on many other pianists, including Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans, and therefore indirectly on countless others," says Lindner.
Throughout his musical career Lindner has shared the stage with countless big names in a wide range of musical genres. . The long list of other artists Lindner has been both able and fortunate enough to have shared stage and/or studio includes: Lauryn Hill (arranger/musical director), Claudia Acuña (musical director/arranger/pianist), Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Branford Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Paquito D’Rivera, Christian McBride, Lionel Loueke, Junior Cook, Jon Hendricks, James Moody, Graciella and other members of the Mario Bauza Orchestra, Curupira, Mark Turner, Lou Donaldson, Dakota Staton, Clarence "C" Sharpe, Jimmy Vass, Arnie Lawrence, Jimmy Lovelace, Jimmy Cobb, The Henry Mancini Orchestra, Reggie Washington, Michal Cohen, Gene Lake, Clark Gayton, Vernel Fournier, Pharaoh's Daughter, Pink Noise, Edmar Castañeda, Bill Cosby, and many others.
I love music and feel blessed to play with musicians i respect and love, and to also be able to have and express my own ideas and vision." check out Jason Lindner Gives You Now Vs Now on Anzic Records, coming October 20, 2009.
