Influences
I like Poetry, Pop, Folk, Jazz, Reggae, Latin, Blues, Bluegrass.
My favorite songs are written by Bono and Dylan, Prince, Squeeze, Elliott Smith, Manu Chao. These days I aspires to write songs with the subltely and mix of styles of Arto Lindsay; with the jazz/blues and wry ironies of Mose Allison; with the clean synthesis of pop sophistication of The Sea and Cake.
Though I learned to sing in church, as a songwriter I began with Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. Major inspiration followed from Walt Whitman, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Duke Ellington The Beatles, Bob Marley, Tom Waits, Billy Bragg, Tom Lehrer, Duke Ellington, Hoagy Charmicheal, Prince, Pixies/Frank Black, Pavement, U2, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Elliott Smith, Wes Montgomery, Manu Chao, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Beastie Boys, Squeeze, Cat Stevens, Hall and Oats, Velvet Underground, Mose Allison, Gil Scott-Heron, Tortoise, Stereolab, Yo La Tengo, De La Soul, Outkast, Fela Kuti, Dizzy Gillespie, Fugazi, Radiohead, Dead Kennedeys, Dead Milkmen, Franz Ferdinand, Talking Heads, David Byrne, Hank Williams, Black Uhuru, Placebo, Arto Lindsay, Count Basie, Beck, Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday, Bjork, Brian Eno, Cake, The Clash, Django Reinhardt, Donovan, The Flaming Lips, James Brown, Loius Armstrong, Money Mark, Nirvana, The Sea and Cake, The Shins, Paul Simon, Slick Rick, Soninc Youth, Soul Coughing, Stan Getz, Stevie Wonder, They Might Be Giants, Ween, Willie Nelson, Your Momma...

J Molin is a folk musician who has surrounded himself with rock and jazz. He is a folkie in the Guthrie/Dylan school of attention to lyrical power. His words have the vivid depth of Bob Dylan, Elliott Smith, Arto Lindsay. But he is, more often than not, dressed up with a band of driving pop and latin jazz sensibility. His quitntet includes Oliver Steck, a trumpet and accordian player, and the latin back-up singer, Karla Manzur.
Raised in Washington D.C, J went off to New York University not so much to study philosophy, but to write and perform songs in Grenwich Villiage at Bleeker Street open mics. After a year in Dublin, writing songs and singing in an Anglican choir, J returned to D.C. and played coffee shops, getting his major start at Iota and then the 9:30 Club. In 1996 J headed South to settle in Austin, TX., near his family, where he has performed all over, but mostly in Austin, at Ruta Maya and the Cactus Cafe.
For many years J gigged, sharing the songwriting spotlight with Doug Snyder in Z is for Zillah, a trio formed with Terry Bozio's protoge precussionist Wayne Willburne. Five years ago J went his own way and released his first commercial album "j", in March of 2005, featuring local Austin jazz trumpet sensation Ephraim Owens. CD's are available directly through his website everydayj.com, and at Waterloo Records.
Steve Stockman, who is now a BBC radio host, knew J in Dublin and places J's first album in his top 20 for the year:
"It took ten years of world wide web investigation and a lucky break to track him down in Austin Texas about to release "j" a collection of intelligent songs about love and life. Think Damian Rice with trumpets and jazz instead of that cello and classical air. His song Sunday Morning takes you from Trinity to Adelaide Road Church and back in the most vivid cinematic color and character. Has every city a genius like this lying around?"
