Jasper Gate has Hootie and the Blowfish syndrome--people want to meet Jasper like they wanted to meet Hootie. But Jasper Gate is really just Duke and Dawn Davis, but no folk duo, mind you. Duke cut his teeth playing hair metal until he found salvation in the acoustic styles of Michael Hedges and Leo Kottke. Dawn, it must be said, was a folk singer in Athens, GA, which can be heard in the sometimes Joni Mitchell-inspired lyrical style. With a sound that lilts in the Sundays/10,000 Maniacs way, Jasper Gate have shown their ability to blend and fuse with a variety of groups and audiences. They have performed with acts as diverse as The Dead Milkmen, Inner Circle, Sixpence None the Richer, October Project, Vigilantes of Love, and Third Day. Their music has been aired on college radio and NPR--now there’s a combo! Duke has even written and recorded music for MTV’s The Real World. Never ones to keep it under wraps, Jasper Gate have performed all across the country, and even a bit in Canada. At home in a variety of venues and settings, their music is intelligent, emotional, artistic, beautiful and human.
