Jawbone books take music very seriously. And we love books. Well designed, quality books covering the music we care about.
First up for 2008, two new titles:
Bowie In Berlin covers the crazy couple of years that Bowie spent in Germany attempting to clean up his act after practically losing his mind in LA. The "recovery" period also saw the creation of three of Bowie's most renowned albums: Low , "Heroes" and Lodger . Whilst based in Berlin he also produced two classic albums for his co-hort in debauchery Iggy Pop ( The Idiot and Lust For Life ) and appeared in the ill-received film Just A Gigolo .
Bowie In Berlin is a must read for fans of Bowie's music from this era. Thomas Jerome Seabrook analyses the songs, recordings and just exactly what the arist was getting up to, bringing this unique music to life.
Beatles For Sale is a brand new way of looking at a story you may think you know inside out. Author John Blaney shows for the first time how the group and their inner circle invented so much of what we now recognise as the modern business of making and selling rock music. The book details the ups and downs of the group as they promoted, advertised, and sold records, played concerts, sold merchandise, made films, and set up publishing and record companies of their own. It is a story of naivety and greed, inexperience and luck, gullibility and ingenuity. It is the story of every aspect of how The Beatles made money (and how virtually every group since then has followed in their footsteps). Another quality Beatles tome for your library.
Here are a few of our currently available titles that will impress the sharp mind:
LA writer and musicologist Domenic Priore's Riot On Sunset Strip follows the rise of rock and roll in 1960s Hollywood. Featuring lots of rare pictures and sharp socio-historical text this is perfect reading for the 1960s freak, US garage fan and cultural studies student.
Bob Dylan and Band scholars have been waiting for this one for a mighty long time. Sid Griffin's Million Dollar Bash tells the story of the "basement tapes", the songs and the people involved. Although none of the resulting material was issued commercially at the time the sessions gave birth to a number of Dylan's most covered songs: these included, Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity's 'This Wheels On Fire', The Byrds' 'You Ain't Going Nowhere' and Manfred Mann's 'Mighty Quinn'. Featuring interviews with Robbie Robertson, Roger McGuinn and many more this is the definitive "basement tapes" work.
Christopher Hjort's dazzling day by day study of the ever evolving and incestuous mid-'60s British Blues Boom Strange Brew: Eric Clapton And The British Blues Boom follows John Mayall's Blues Breakers, The Rolling Stones, Cream and Fleetwood Mac, to name but a few, in the journey that saw R&B become rock music.
Often dismissed as "kiddie-pop" and "bubblegum" The Monkees have had a hard time from critic's and music fans over the ensuing years, yet a hardcore elite of musicians and 1960s pop fans have always held them in high esteem. Andrew Sandoval is one such person. His stunning day by day, blow by blow account of The Monkees' career is laden with photos and detailed text chronicling the rise to fame of the marketed group, their desire to be taken seriously and their split. The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story Of The 1960s TV Pop Sensation is a highly informative account of this unfairly dismissed act.
