  • Bio

“j.o.” .. .. It was the dawn of the drum machine! The age of the “Potty Studio” (I mean, Portastudio). .. .. This website is a flashback to the 70s and 80s phase of my musical journey. sometimes cheesy production, but not the stinky kind; more of a gruyere considering the era and tools at our disposal! .. .. Some tunes were recorded on my “potty studio” Portastudio (a self-contained 4 track cassette studio) using one of the first drum machines ever made; the MXR! remember the MXR?! with the nice big drum pads!? and how about bouncing tracks on a 4 track where you can not even bounce to an adjacent track! You really learned to think ahead on mixing and compromising for degradation of sound during the process! .. .. When not using my “Portastudio”; I recorded at Wizard Studios, Secret Sound Studios (NY), Jon Russell's Presence Studio in CT (when he was in his parent's basement with an 8 track, then, later his 16 track facility. Jon is now one of 30 world class studios / Westport, CT!)), Long Hill Recording (CT) Paul Opalach!!, Carriage House Stamford, CT (Johnny Montagnese), Trod Nossell (rest in peace “Doc”), and many more... .. .. I have had the immense privilege of working with incredible musicians on my early recordings that many of you may know: .. .. in the “big” studios there were Joel Rosenblatt (Spyro Gyra), Jeff Pevar (Ray Charles, Crosby Stills Nash), Joey Melotti (Michael Bolton, Barry Manilow), Phil Stone (Grace Slick), Elliot Randall (yes, as in Steely Dan!), Paul Guzzone (Bacon Brothers), Scott Spray (Johhny Winter), Mike Malfesi (Orleans), Jack Sonni (Mark Knopfler)....in the medium sized studio; Jon Russell (keys and producer), Joey Melotti, Bobby Renaudo, Paul Opalach.....in the “porta studio” at home; Augie Corica, Leon Lebenkorn, Dave Webster, Robbie Georgia, etc.. A brilliant drummer from CT. named Augie Corica (the Doctors) created the drum parts, produced and sang in the background on “I Can’t Let Go”, “I Need a Hero” and “Betray”. I played all keyboard parts. Can you tell we were big fans of Prince and the Revolution? Augie forever changed the way I approach vocals and I am so much the better for it. Thank you Augie! .. .. That’s Paul Opalach playing everything except synths on "Driver" and "People Talk" which I co-wrote and performed with Don Monopoli. .. .. In the 70’s; My band and I performed and toured with Harry Chapin, Muddy Waters, Martin Mull, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Batdorf and Rodney, The Outlaws, Aztec Two Step, Janis Ian, John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Orleans, Tom Rush to name a few . I played colleges, concerts and clubs from Halifax, Noca Scotia to Boca Raton, FL. In New York City; Trax, Tramps, Max’s Kansas City (received a rave review in Variety!), The Other End, The Bitter End and many more. In CT. I am so proud to have played The Shaboo Inn and, of course, Toad’s Place. .. .. My final gig was 1981 at the now iconic Toad’s Place New Haven, CT. where I got my start long ago when it was converted from Uncle Charley’s to Toad’s Place. My band mates for that farewell show were Joey Melotti, Jeff Pevar, Phil Stone, Joel Rosenblatt! .. .. In the mid 80s; Rex Fowler of Aztec Two Step and I co-wrote about 25 songs. Some appear on Rex's solo CD "Trains n Rain n Attitudes" with which we enjoyed success on Pony Canyon Records / Japan. "99.99 Mine" was a hit! We created gloriously cheezy music (if there is such a thing) called "POP TRASH"! I posted samples here. I produced on the portastudio and played all the instruments. (Gees! maybe I shouldn't be bragging about that!) Make sure you listen to POP TRASH with tongue firmly planted in cheek! .. .. Check out my co-writes with the inimitable, multi award winning (Juno awards in Canada are like our Grammys) writer/singer from the group TORONTO.... Miss Holly Woods! (Obviously recorded on my now infamous "potty studio"!) Thank you Bill Lowery (rest in peace!) and Don Perry for that hook up!! .. .. This site is a big THANK YOU!! to all the incredible musicians who made me what I am today! (see my myspace.com/redwarriorrecords ). I hope I have done you proud! .. .. I hope you enjoy this site! Wouldn’t it be funny if I got offered a record deal?! Like I told my buddy, Stone, if you wait long enough, the 70s or 80s could come back!! .. .. “j.o.”!! Bringin’ Cheezy back! “that’s groovy!” ...... .. ......Get more ..Myspace layouts.. at pYzam.com................ ....

  • Sounds Like

old school, early drum machines, porta studio music with as much funk as we could! "Pop Trash" is Rex Fowler of Aztec Two Step and Jayne. I suppose "Pop Trash" sounds like the B-52s meet Bob Dylan. like peanut butter and chocolate! an unlikely combination, but, really quite good!

Styles Studio, Shelton, Ct; the year is 1976, Jayne is the singer/sonwriter to perform at our "opening day recording demonstration". We picked her b/c she was the most famous person we knew at the time. The studio closed to the public 10 years later, the building was totally demolished in 2007 :(to hide the evidence:)and Jayne is still the most famous person we know!!!
