Jay O received a phone call from one his closest friends. ‘Jay, I’m in the car, and they’ve been following me for a few blocks now.’ Jay O knew what that meant. He reached into his closet, pulled out a silver .38, and waited. It had been a long time coming.
Jay O realized early on that his life was one of survival and difference. Born in Watts, California, Jay O and his family moved to Tyler, Texas after a contract was put on his father’s life. ‘My father was a minister – both the Black Panthers and the KKK didn’t want him around.’
Growing up in Tyler under the rigors of everyday life, Jay O was the one that wasn’t supposed to make it. ‘We were poor - we used to ride around Tyler on our bikes, picking up cans. Me and my brother - we were known as the Twinz.’
Of nine siblings, Jay O was the rebel. So much so, that he raised the ire of everyone around him - including his family. ‘My father used to tell me - I had a hunger for the street, and that would leave me in one of three places - in a gang, a jail, or in a grave’, Jay O recalls.
Over time, life seemed to get better. With a new girl, and a fresh lane to pursue music, Jay O had a new lease on life. But, as much as things got better, they got worse. ‘My girl became addicted to cocaine - through a prostitute she’d met.’
As they struggled to contain her addiction, Jay O entered what his father had long predicted - street life. ‘I would pick it up, so I could cut her use down. I didn’t want her to stop cold-turkey.’ After a while, the couple’s debt had become too much - local dealers wanted their money. ‘It was time to get strapped’, Jay O vividly remembers.
All throughout this time, Jay O kept his aspirations to make music hidden from even those closest to him. ‘I’d grown up on gospel - rap music wasn’t really accepted. But I couldn’t preach gospel music, when people have reality hitting them in the face everyday.’
‘I’ll tell it with a lot more ruthlessness, a lot more viciousness - turn-the-other-cheek no more’, Jay O reflects. Fed up with the complexity of the streets, Jay O left his girl at a Greyhound terminal, out of his life. It was time for a new beginning - again.
‘For me to give up my family - to accept my calling - that was real.’ Jay O took the long drive from Tyler, Texas, to Buffalo, NY, in his ‘little red car’ - a Nissan 240 SX convertible.
Changing locations couldn’t help him completely escape his past. While in Buffalo, Jay O received a call he dreads to this day. His brother, one that had orchestrated his rap career, had taken his own life.
‘He was a friend to me, before a brother. He was my producer, he was my mentor. He’s a hero in my eyes - he got me out of my own sh!t, but I couldn’t get him out.’
Throughout it all, there’s been one recurring theme in Jay O’s life - music. With streamlined discipline and a steadfast demeanor, Jay O approached his art with the same tenacity that life had approached him. This same tenacity led Jay O to Real Deal Entertainment – his managers, friends, and partners-in-crime.
While looking for a hypeman for his live shows in Buffalo, Jay O came across a young, brash co-worker named Kash. The two built a steady rapport, which led to them realizing a common goal – succeeding in the music business. ‘The collaboration was bound to happen – it was inevitable,’ recalls Kash. Headed by Kash, Jagz and Eightseven, the business acumen of Real Deal Entertainment Inc, perfectly complemented by Jay O’s true-to-life tales, will finally bring audiences what they’ve been waiting for – real music.
‘In times we’re living in now, you gotta hit people with something realer. The rap game is gritty.’
