JayQuan has been active as an Emcee and Dj since the early eighties, when the first rap records were created. Throughout the years he has released material with the Too Def Crew, The First Sons and as a solo artist. JayQuan’s philosophy is that although the music has changed, the essence of what made young people fall in love with Hop Hop remains the same. “ A good beat and catchy hook has always been the foundation of Hip Hop, as long as the song is fun – it was always about that from day one” says JayQuan. In the mid 80s Jay got into producing and he has worked with drum machines as far back as the Boss Dr Rhythm and Roland 808/909 up through the Ensoniq Eps/Asr & Akai MPC series. JayQuan is an avid record collector of all genres of music, as he started collecting records at just nine years old. He has been lucky enough to interview and record with some of the true pioneers of Hip Hop music, and his website www.jayquan.com is a testimony to his love of the culture.
After making his first record back in the late 80s JayQuan has been a student of the music business. He has his own publishing company, and has released his music under his own J.A.H. Music label. In his spare time he educates artists about royalties, how to set up a label and things of that nature.
For 2007 JayQuan plans a mix tape produced by himself, and hosted by a few Hip Hop icons. He is also working on a project with fellow Virginia Native Clayton Savage, who is an excellent producer, arranger, musician and vocalist in his own right. Jay Also plans to reunite with some of his former musical partners from Richmond, VA and release music. Jay says “ with the technology available, and the fact that we all have the ability to record in the comfort of our own homes, we should be releasing quality product several times a year. Everyone that I work with has veteran status at what they do, so the days of waiting for XYZ Record label to come knocking on our doors are over”.
