Leader, cellist, and composer, Choi Heun Jeoung immerses herself in a diversity of styles of music. When performing, she emotes her love of Jazz, Classical, Gospel, and various Contemporary musics, and brings her unique perspective from Korea.
Co-leader, violinist, and composer Fung Chern Hwei is from Malaysia. Previously classically trained, he is equally adapted to many other styles such as Rock, Hip-hop, Baroque period performance, Malaysian traditional music, and of course, Jazz. Chern Hwei also performs with Akim Funk Buddha.
Jayu takes its name from a word common to Cantonese and Korean, which in English means freedom. Jayu is a New York City based group that features Violin and Cello in a Jazz setting, along with Piano. The members pull from their diverse musical backgrounds to create a unique sound over an eclectic set of their original compositions and fresh arrangements. They produce a sound with touches of Funk, Blues, Western classical music, and Malaysian classical music, all infused with Jazz.
