Jazmu formed in 2005 as a splinter group from the core of Cork world-fuson band Sumu, featuring the skillful guitar of congolise-born, Cork based Niwel Tsumbu and the Sumu rhythm section - Feargal Lee (drums/percussion) and Rik Appleby (Bass Guitar). They have been delighting audiences in cities around Ireland as well as the Cork International Jazz Festival and the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Cultures.
Taking the Sumu's fusion of Mid-African Rhythm's with jazz melodies and funk/rock stylings as a starting point, Jazmu expand the jazz aspect, the rythm section keeping a tight hold of the inovative grooves allowing Tzumbu's guitar to explore the outer regions of his compositions themes. The result is an improvised journey in sound, the band feeling where the music wishes to travel, taking in be-bop, reggea, swing, rock and funk then returning to the tunes original theme.
On Occations there will be an invited guest Musician who will bring an added colour to the vivid aural painting. Also expect the odd jazz standard or Sumu song and the result is an unexpected journey into an uncharted rhythmic and melodic realm.
Wishing you guys a happy, blessed and prosperous 2008. May Edunmare who controls the spectrum shine His light to and through you, also colour your life in 2008 and beyond. Blessings! 'Boye Papa-Gee & CAb Foundation.
To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never, to forget." - Arundhati Roy
