Early in 1998, Jef Peace sat in on a jam session with bassist Don Burgett and Saxophonist Ray Coffey. As Jef sat listening to Don and Ray work on a jazz song they had composed, the words to his recently finished poem, "Hindsight" kept running through his head. He spoke his thought that the words fit really well with the music aloud and Ray said "go for it." Both Ray and Don were excited by what had happened and in many sessions to follow, several more word jazz songs were arranged by this initial trio.
They added drummer Jeff Carden and pianist Cyd Peace to the ensemble and with the very capable direction of producer Fran Ashcroft, recorded Don't Look Back in the summer of '99.
Shortly after that, guitarist Brian Frech joined and the group experimented with their own brand of country rock and reggae. From these experiments came their first album, Can Ya Dig It in 2000.
Shortly after this album, drummer Tim Bruton joined the band and Jazza Diction enjoyed a couple more years of live gigs and two more EP's, Jazza Short and 3-4-All before "The Lie" ended the band. Ray felt that Jef's writing was becoming too dark for his spiritual journey and the band voted to disband.
Jef is now looking for musicians to resurrect Jazza Diction, but the music the original band created is still available for all to enjoy.
If your sound is turned on, the song that "killed" Jazza Diction is now playing . . . "The Lie."

"Before success comes in any man's life, he is sure to be met with much temporary defeat, perhaps some failure. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and the most logical thing to do is to quit. Failure is a trickster with a keen sense of irony and cunning. It takes great delight in tripping one when success is almost within reach." - Napoleon Hill

Oh I already have this! Got it on CD some time ago and I´m still listening with amazement to those poetic verses enligned with bouncy, catchy jazz tunes and rock ballads. A bit of Kerouac and Ginsburgh perhaps, but most of all Jef Peace at his very best with his happy combo!

Used to hang at Myskyn's Tavern downtown Charleston when I was a kid sometimes and listen to some of the jazz and blues in there...that place is closed now, but was a really cool place to hear good music and usually free. I also had the Joni Mitchell album dedicated to Charles Mingus, loved it man, especially Joni Mitchell singin his stuff - just awesome.
