Bio
Effortlessly spanning genres, the edgy ska/rock songs of Jazzberry Ram play well against the smoothness of the more hip-hop and funk influenced tracks. Jazzberry Ram's ability to write timeless hooks, melodies and hair-raising harmonies helps to put the craft back in songcraft. Al MacInnes' insipidly catchy bass lines together with Colin Stobie's hard rock drumming create the bedrock for Drew Stewart's tongue-in-cheek rapping and staccato, funky guitar. Stephen Stewart's classy yet powerful piano and organ style adds that sweet flavour missing in today's guitar rock and thump thump of the clubs. The end result is a truly fresh and original sound that can only be described as Jazzberry Ram. Their debut CD, Superfishyallahtea (1994), sold over 10000 copies off the stage. Jr. Adventure Hr. (1996) sold out before the end of every tour. Their 1999 effort, That Sound We Make, received critical and commercial success across the continent. Their fourth full length, Landshark, was released in January, 2003. Jazzberry Ram has completed 14 Canadian and 6 US tours. They made terrific headway by getting songs off their first 3 CDs onto major US network and cable television. Showtime's cartoon series Ratz, Jennifer Love Hewitt's drama, Time of Your Life, and Higher Ground both on Fox, ShowTime's Madison and The Chris Isaak Show (on which the band had an auspicious acting debut playing a Christian Rock band gone bad.), featured the songs, "Proud", "A Little Melody", "Two Mice", "Let's Start", "The Purveyors of Cool", and "Sweetness". They've performed three times on the CTV/Comedy Network's "Mike Bullard Show" and on Global/WIC's "Jim Byrnes Show". Videos for the songs "Pablo Jack Horner", "Small Screen" and "Free Beer" received airplay on Much Music. They've played nearly every breakfast television show in existence. The variety and skill of performers they have opened for is a testament to the versatility and quality of Jazzberry Ram. They've had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Run DMC, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Big Sugar, Great Big Sea, Chantal Kreviazuk, Wide Mouth Mason, Rheostatics, I Mother Earth, Nazareth, Northern Pikes, David Wilcox, DOA and The Rascalz and so many more. Promoters see Jazzberry Ram as an excellent way to strengthen ticket sales and create excitement earlier in the night. On videos and in studios Jazzberry Ram has worked with Dave Pelletier (54-40, Moist, Jann Arden), Jamie Murray (Matthew Good Band, Pure), Andre Wahl (54-40, Philosopher Kings), GGGarth Richardson (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against The Machine), Jerry Wong (Damn the Diva, Aaron Grant) and Vic Levak (Balligomingo, Kristy Thirsk).
